The town of Gerlach is hiring a public works technician

Post by some seeing eye » Mon Dec 08, 2025 8:22 am

I'm not sure how one could afford to live in Gerlach with this job...

Gerlach is probably its own US Census block, so the distribution of income would be interesting. Billionaires should probably buy a vacation home and build an apartment units to house all the year around BORG staff. Did Bruno's house sell?

GERLACH JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Gerlach General Improvement District is accepting applications for a Public Works Technician.
Starting wage will be $20/hour. The successful candidate for this position will receive a pay increase of one dollar per hour upon completion of each of the following certificates or licenses:
• Nevada Water Treatment I
• Nevada Water Treatment II
• Nevada Water Distribution I,
• Nevada Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I,
• Nevada Pesticide Applicator
• Backflow Tester
• Radiation Safety Officer.
Should the successful candidate have one or more of these certificates, the increase(s) in pay per hour will be effective upon hiring.
The successful candidate for this position will be expected to either acquire the following certificates within three years or be a qualified operator in training within three years of hire.
• Nevada Water Treatment I
• Nevada Water Distribution I
• Nevada Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I
• Nevada Pesticide Applicator
This employee will receive a performance review after 30 days of employment and again at 90 days. If the employee has met all expectations, he/she will receive a pay increase of $.50/hour following each of these performance reviews when approved by the Board at the next Public Meeting.
The employee will be working an average of 24 hours/week. This may increase due to workload and as the employee assumes more responsibility.
Benefits include PERS and Paid Time Off (PTO). The GGID will pay one half of the employee’s health insurance. Annual Cost of Living Adjustments, matching Washoe County, are provided if the budget permits.
The successful candidate for this position must have a current Nevada Driver License.
This will start as part time trainee position, over time moving towards an active role in the operation and leadership of:
● Public drinking water
● Sanitary wastewater disposal
● Transfer station management
● Maintenance of parks, public building facilities, and other shared areas around town.
The GGID is not necessarily looking for a trained water system/wastewater system operator. We understand that many of these skills are unique to the industry and that we may not find many candidates possessing them. We are looking for general knowledge and familiarity with mechanical processes related to the work and the willingness to learn.
A successful candidate will have knowledge and experience in the following areas:
● High school-level math and science
● Basics of water conveyance - pipes, plumbing fixtures, pumps, filtration, and general hydraulics
● Basics of wastewater processes and bacteriological safety
● General practices relating to construction and repair of facilities, processes, vehicles, and other town resources
● Operation of computers in a standard office environment. Spreadsheets, word processing, online web-based resources, and email are used daily. Comfortable proficiency with these tools is an absolute requirement to work in this role.
● Familiarity with safe driving methods both on and off road, larger vehicle operation, and maneuvering trailers (Five years clean driving record)
● Understanding of, and a willingness to practice safe working processes, including OSHA regulations
Additional areas of knowledge and abilities
Public works activities take place throughout the year and in all weather conditions. Extremes of heat and cold, rain, ice, and long periods of physical activity are common occurrences. Responding to system emergencies may be necessary in the middle of the night and critical work may require periods longer than an 8-hour shift to complete.
At times employees are required to operate under difficult conditions. Whenever possible, the District will ensure that all necessary tools, equipment, materials, and documentation are on hand. At times, some items may not be available and this employee will be required to “make it work” with what is on hand.
A successful candidate will be willing to put in the work ahead of time to minimize these occurrences, but also be able to “roll with it” should the need arise. The ability to improvise and overcome difficult scenarios is highly valued in a remote system such as ours.
All employees are expected to bring to the workplace a can-do attitude and a commitment to continuous improvement of the system.
Applications can be obtained at the Gerlach GID office 410 Cottonwood Street, Gerlach or requested online at [email protected].
