Off-topic pedo rant
Nowhere else to get this off my chest:
I enforce the abuse policy for a major US network provider. Starting in late September, I started receiving complaints about a hardcore commercial pedophelia site running in one of our customer's network space.
Checked the link: Hardcore sex acts with children ages 2-10. Most disgusting shit I've ever seen. Reported it to cybertipline, told them to witness the shit within 48 hours or call me, otherwise I'm nuking it. Called the police, the FBI, all told me to report it to cybertipline.
Our customer nuked the pedo sites, but complaints kept coming in; the jackass just kept starting new sites until he had 14 of them operating. Our customer, a significant webhosting company with my axe dangling over their entire internet connectivity, rooted up all the pedo content and banned the source IP (which hosts a love chatroom in Florida.)
Then, suddenly, Homeland Security shows up. Word is, an agent recognized a relative and went nuclear. Excellent. It's nice to know that there's justice as long as you're related to a Homeland Security agent.
Except, we nuked that shit within 24 hours after we saw it because the Cybertipline never asked us to do otherwise. Now, HS says they can't really prosecute the guy unless they can prove the stuff was actually online. Which I can, but printed copies with time, date and URL don't count. Plus, faxing the content is commission of a felony itself.
Today I got a subpoena from Homeland Security. Far fucking out. Except, it's the "immigration and customs" department.
If there's a grim silver lining, it's that the commercial pedophile operates an Arabic forum, which means he's probably mid-eastern or arab-American. DOH! Now he's got Homeland Security on a personal crusade to get him because he featured the rape of one of their young relatives on his websites, and he's arabic. I'm willing to bet that guy does two years at Gitmo before they even file charges.
Thank you for indulging my rant. If there's ever been justification for the death penalty, it's in a double-sealed set of envelopes with warnings all over them in a locked drawer in my desk and if you saw it, I'd say a fair amount of you would volunteer to throw the switch.

As a parent and a human being, I thank you wholeheartedly for both your outrage and your vigilance. You did the right thing, and that bastard deserves whatever HS and karma does to him.

K first off I think it's great what you've done, but I have an unrelated question.
The last few weeks I've been emailing the abuse guys at various service proividers about spam I've been getting.
What I have is a form letter. I do a whois on the originating email IP, track down the abuse department for the sevice provider and mail it off.
So far I haven't had any responses (just one automated message).
As someone who works in the abuse department of a network provider do you think I'm just wasting my time with these emails, or what? Sure feels that way...

BRING 'EM ON! You're not wasting your time at all. If you're the only one complaining about an issue it's probably not spam, but if you and ten or a hundred other people complain about the same series, it'll get the admin's attention.WebGraphics wrote:K first off I think it's great what you've done, but I have an unrelated question.

I get about 2,000 "complaints" a day so it's extremely difficult to see the single-complaint issues and impossible to address them all. One problem is spam filters tend to block spam complaints, so the abuse inbox is unfiltered and gets flooded with junkmail. Another fraction of the daily volume has nothing to do with the network, and there's the scientologists, whackjobs and the people bawling about how somebody called them a jew or a nazi or whatever...
Auto-replies encourage people but the problem is that an increasing amount of complaints are automatically generated and autoreplies to them often bounce, generating error reports and more Inbox noise.
The problems that get the most complaints are the first to get fixed. Often as not it's some small business with a compromised router or some average household with an infected computer. The ISP just has to help them out a little, so by complaining and bringing it to their attention you're actually doing everybody a favor. My job is to lean on the ISPs and make sure its gets done.
Hope that helps.

I am suggesting that you are a potential rapist and your constant reminders of how unselfishly great and wonderful you are just zzzzzzzz...... Yawn, I'm sorry. Where was I? Oh yeah. So the other day I was on a plane that stopped over in Portland. And as we were taking off, six terrorist leaped from their seats and they had guns. Big guns. And since I was trained as a double KGB agent I pulled out a six pack of rootbeer, which I carry for just such an emergency, and knocked them all out and saved the day.ZaphodBurner wrote:Please elaborate. Ok thanks zaphod, now I think its worth it again.
I keep getting a certain spam email, they are all the same and about software for low prices. I have no idea how I got on this list but I seem to get at least one of these messages a day, sometimes I get about 5 of them.
The thing that set me off is the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom leads to more advertisements

One way of harvesting e-mail addresses is to infect systems with viruses or spyware that rifles through the infected system for e-mail addresses and reports it to the harvesting operation. Another is the "unsubscribe" link, which is often a means of validating live addresses. Sure they remove you from THEIR list, but they might sell your address with 2 million others on a CD.WebGraphics wrote:Ok thanks zaphod, now I think its worth it again.

Downloading things like RealPlayer will get you spammed, but they usually tell you that in the fine print.
Those signs on telephone poles saying "Work from Home" or "Make Money on your PC" create little minispammers. They get a CD with names on it, an automated script to create a throwaway dialup account (or a list of servers) and they just run the program without any real idea of what they're actually doing.
Postini is a great filtering service, and SpamCop works pretty well too. The former quarantines mail so you can check it, but SpamCop automatically forwards complaints for you.
Happy hunting. Have a great week!
