Glowing to Hell..

Hello All,

This will be my third burn, and I can't wait to get all dusty and starry-eyed with all you beautiful burners. My campmates and I were discussing our general burn experience/contribution last year and how to improve it, and we thought about how many damn glowsticks we used and threw away. We had a hell of a pile, and it seemed pretty much everyone else out there was using them too. We need to be visible at night and everything, but this year, our camp is going for the re-usable "rice-light" strings that run on battery power. I found mine in one of those "Christmas Village" stores. You can use re-chargeables, so it's pretty cost-effective, actually. And they look so cool, you can rig up lovely headdresses and sexy body jewelry, etc, like that el-wire stuff too (which seems quite a bit more expensive, but hey, if you can afford it..). Just thought I would put out the suggestion to you earth-conscious burners...

I am with you on the glowstick dilema, we try to mix and match our lights, el wire, lanterns, blinkies flashlights and glow sticks. I try put a few glow stick in my backpack or on my wrist or bike to gift/give to the new burners stumbling around the playa unlit.

But ultimately they become moop from the clueless, and if one drops the small plastic connector for the bracelets and necklaces, it will dissapear under a pile of playa dust.

Yep, I know a few fell off of my person, and my bike.. I might try and make some pieces of non-disposable light jewelry for gifting people, if I can find some affordable supplies.... I'm still paying of last year's burn..! :( It would be cool to find some of that non-toxic stuff you can charge with electric or natural light to make some gear out of. Hmm, think I'll do some research on that..

us theatre folk use glow-tape for shows...sunlight rechargable...should last the week of nights. try googling it for best rates. i frequent rosebrand.com for that sort of thing.

Some big box stores have LED glow sticks. I found some on clearance before the '04 burn. they have a switch, run on watch batteries and work great. Brighter than a chemical glow stick and last much longer. I used them again in '05 on the same batteries. Plan to bring them in '06 too, cause they're still going.

Not sure if you can replace the batteries or not, but I figured that when they do finally go dead, and if they aren't able to be disassembled and reloaded, then I'll just recycle them into some other sort of wired-together LED glow suit thing.

I don't buy the cyalume sticks anymore. I got Krill lights. If you see me with a glowstick or -tube, it was gifted to me (and I toss it in the recycling bin when I get home).

cool! Glow tape?? I'm imagining the possibilities.. And it's nice to know there are LED glowsticks. I didn't think the used glowsticks were recyclable.. that would be great. Thanks..

I have a handful of el-tape bike kits, run on batteries. Make excellent hat bands.

I've played with those, too. Last a LONG time. Usually available for around two bucks. They can be re-batteried, but the screw threads are really cheap and they often just fall apart. But I have successfully recycled the LEDs for other projects.

The Krill lights are pretty nice, though not as bright. They run fine on rechargeables, which is nice, and provide plenty of illumination when it's plenty dark. Check to see if they're "single" or "double"- Singles have ONE strip of EL tape, covering half of the clear plastic tube's length, while doubles have TWO for full coverage. About 20-25 bucks at camping stores.

You can get 'em cheaper — lots cheaper — from the company itself. They're in Texas and very Burner-friendly. The Portland Burners did a group order and we knocked it down to around $3-$4 each.

<b>DO NOT, under any circumstances, play $25 for a Krill light!!</b> You can get a nice solar lantern or a brace of kerosene lanterns plus fuel for that much!
