Anonymizers

Post by gyre » Mon Oct 02, 2006 3:52 pm

There was a discussion sometime back on internet privacy and internet proxies, the technical name. They come up better under anonymizer.
I have had several serious attempts to hack my accounts.
Is anyone familiar with this stuff?
The good ones reroute all info continously and keep no records on routing in the network. The goal is privacy, especially if sensitive info is involved.

What is your experience?
Any advice?

Get a Mac, use the firewall, and download and install little snitch.

I'm going the mac direction, but I'd still like the extra protection on the net.
Have you ever used the proxies?

Yes, I use them when I want to be sneaky. From what I know, they are best to cover your tracks from people seeing what you do on the internet.

Any suggestions on which ones are more efficient.
I understand there are differences just as with bandwidth suppliers.

Exactly what do you want the anonymizer to do?

My understanding is that they provide privacy when you are on the net.
That's my primary general goal.
If I'm researching garden fertilizer I don't want to end up on a nofly list.
I'm painfully aware how little privacy is out there.
As I said, I've had financial hack attempts that happened because someone had info they should not.
Also I do some commerce on the web and I have to protect myself and anyone I deal with.
I have found one company verisign, that has been highly recommended to me for web verification. They also offer internet proxy and encryption service at the 128 bit level.

If you are surfing "grow" stuff, you are already on the list.

I was selling hid lights for awhile.
I don't know if I attracted attention, but I only did legal commerce.
I value privacy in general.

A few safety tips/rules I follow:

1) USE A FIREWALL THATS PROPERLY CONFIGURED!

2) Keep your Operating System up to date with latest critical and security updates

3) Keep your Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware up to date

4) Only use browser with java enabled for TRUSTED sites

5) Use an alternative browser with java and cookies disabled for unknowns and general surfing of results from google.

6) Use a proxy server if you MUST visit a site you do not trust.

There was a user named Fravia on the net that had a GREAT website about reverse-engineering Winblows to make it more secure.. might still be around somewhere titled Fravias pages of reverse-engineering.

Also the NSA has a guide for securing Win2000/WinXP that might be helpful. Dont know where on their website it is but it used to be public and free.

Oh yeah.. dont use wireless unless you know how to configure your router properly and use WEP etc etc. If not someone will use their PSP to play games online for free and possibly download TONS of pron on your dime.

Seriously, thanks.
Do you know how to pick a proxy that does what they claim?
I have seen recommendations to test the server.
Verisign looks the best so far.
They offer 128 bit encryption that I plan to use for wireless and financial.
A server set up properly can add a lot of tricks, as you are probably aware. Some are supposed to add variable delays in transmissions.
It's all just old nsa stuff, but should be effective for anyone except the govt.
