Deathmatch: Pabst Blue Ribbon vs. Tecate
Deathmatch: Pabst Blue Ribbon vs. Tecate
The red tide of Tecate cans on the playa started out logically: the cheapest beer, in cans, and tastes great. But this year, it became clear that a great schism has appeared among the population of Black Rock City between those loyal to Tecate vs. those who love PBR.
Is it Red vs. Blue?
Is it patriotic domestic vs. sophisticated import?
Is it Marlboro vs. Camel?
Is it ravers vs. hippies?
(Full disclosure - I'm Tecate)
.

But what about Coors?...

The Central City/Clear Creek site is a 400-square-mile watershed that extends from the Continental Divide east to Denver, CO. Mining wastes were disposed of in Clear Creek contaminating it with zinc and cadmium. Clear Creek and its tributaries are used in whole or in part as a drinking water supply by several municipalities including Georgetown, Idaho Springs, Black Hawk, Golden(read Coors brewery), Westminster, Thornton, and Arvada. Water from Clear Creek is also used for agriculture and recreation.

As a Union Steward in Denver in a former life, we thought we had Coors(non-union ) nailed with the shit water from Clear Creek. They get the water from wells that don't have all that groovy stuff in it, sorry.

i'm sorry - but it's all about the PBR. a friend brought my booze a couple years ago (she had more room for 'stuff') and could only find Tecate on the way in. it just doesn't go as well with playa dust. it doesn't.
and it always tastes warm. even when it's cold.
last year i brought my own damn pbr.

PissWarm
Before my first burn, a friend of mine and I did a test of beers to see which one tasted okay when it was piss warm. The idea was that it might be likely that in 110 degree weather that we might end up with warm beer. The results were:
1. Miller Genuine Draft
2. Tecate
3. Pabst Blue Ribbon
In fact, Pabst tasted amazingly bad, as if it were simply a concoction of spices and chemicals. MGD and Tecate were very close to good.
In a later test back at home, I found that Genesee Beer (a local Rochester, NY beer) beat them all -- it approached tasting _good_ when it was as warm as tea.

Well hell, if we're gonna do off brands (e.g. non PBR)...
#1 - Brought to you from the Spoetzl Memorial Brewery, in scenic Shiner, Texas, brewed with the finest of waters from the Edwards Aquifer (as is PBR)...

And #2, from a small hole in the wall in Portland...

Strange, however, is finding out they're both owned by the same company, who's 3rd brand of 3 (Pete's Wicked) is also on my list...
Calculate the odds of that...
________
PBR - it's what's for breakfast.

Marijuana In Beer
OR "DON'T BOGART THAT BEER MY FRIEND"
By Greg Kitsock
It was called Brain Death, and it was a highÂgravity brew in more than one sense of the word.
Brain Death was the creation of two homebrewers and certified beer judges, both brewers of whom are highly respected in their hobby. (For reasons that will become apparent, they wish to remain anonymous.) A potent barleywine (OG 1,100), Brain Death contained an extra ingredient that one of the euphemistically calls "special hops".
In fact, the beer was "dryÂhemped" with flowers of the female marijuana plant, homegrown by an acquaintance in Texas. The alcohol and tetrahydrocannibanol (THC) made a mindÂrattling combination.
The creators of Brain Death brought some samples to the 1988 American Homebrewers Association convention in Denver, CO. There, the brewers were approached by Michael Jackson. Recalled one of them: "We told him what was in it, and poured him a pint. FortyÂfive minutes later, he came back and asked, 'Is there any chance there would be some Brain Death left?' We gave him our last bottle."
I will take some Brain Death.......wait what where we talking about?
Is there any chance there would be some Brain Death left?

Beer snobs are morons. On a 110F day the last thing I want is a mini-aquarium full of swampwater that won't fit on the dashboard or work in a beer hat.

WHATEVER!!!!!! Tecate does not even begin to campare to PBR. I can drink PBR warm and its ok (not that I do real often but I can and that is what's truly important). I can barely stomach Tecate cold and it still tastes like warm beer... EWWWWWW!!!!!madmatt wrote:Yes. That's why they're twice as much money. My choice of beer depends on the moment.
If it is in the middle of a fucking blazing hot afternoon and I am working on an art project, some camp structure, or for the man, I want some very cold pisswater beer that I can drink like water and has a relatively low alcohol content and doesn't make my mouth taste like a donkey shit in it 15 minutes later. My choice there is PBR, Bud light, Keystone light (sorry, no Miller products, Miller leaves my mouth gummy and it is too sweet) ... in other words, a rice beer that isn't too sweet.
If I am relaxing around a burn barrel at night, bring on the stout, amber, whatever. I will take a Guiness or a Newcastle if I have a choice. Rice in the day, barley at night. Hoppy beers at night. Sweeter beers at night. Daytime is for watery swill served ice cold.

Indeed, Bud Light is the best, but I didn't want to mention it and see it disappear off the shelves.

Don't they sell Milwaukee's Best Light in the western states? Available in convenient 30-cubes just like PBR, highly economical, and very resistant to cooler pilfery by parched ravers because of its uncool association with The Flyovers.
I still haven't had any better beer on-playa than the cold Guiness that a friendly soul handed me after we emerged from the deep playa on an extended High Noon Art Hike back in '03. A close second has to be the bottle of RebA!'s Playa Pale that I saved until a dark and snowy Michigan February day that seemed to be the exact opposite of Burning Man and then consumed while watching "Beyond Black Rock".
