Rabbi

I have not been around this thread for a while as you know.

Would you please give me a quick update?

Matters of intrest are Rob the Wop (I did not drink from the evil green bottle) and is Ivy still around? Just 2 questions to start and if anyone wants to add comments feel free. As if I could stop comments.

Thanks,

Calsur

Hi Calsur,

Well Rob comes around occasionally, and I don't think I've seen Ivy in a while. But there are plenty of other cool people who have filled the void. What the hell have you been up to?

Nuts

Well, Rabbi, its like this.

My boss is currently going through a divorce and is therefore legally insane. This started over a year ago and he has been taking some major time off so he is not around much. I have had to step in and take up the slack. Working too many hours and WAY too many people have my phone number. Plus classes to help get my Land Surveyors license and my Mom and Dad have had some health problems so I have had to help out with rides to doctors appointments and that kind of stuff.

Basically too much to do and not enough hours in the day.

At least you have a job.....

Hey C. I have a question. How do you get the GPS coordinates for a piece of (calif) property? and does it cost anything?

Rebbi - if you zoom on the property with GoogleEarth, I think the data on the screen includes the latitude and longitude of the courser.

GPS

Post by calsur » Wed Feb 14, 2007 11:38 pm

Rabbi,

As a semi pro surveyor I need to know what you are looking for as an output before I can advise you. Are you after lat/long? Or California Coordinate System (CCS)? A GPS receiver spits out what ever you set under the units. And what kind of accuracy? Mile or Foot?

I work in Orange County and the Orange County Surveyor (OCS) has just an awesome GPS network and it is all free for the control. Control is a set of monuments that the OCS has put lat/long and CCS values on and you are never more than about a half mile away from 4 points anywhere in an urban area. The rural is a bit spottier.

This is the link to the OCS link :

http://www.ocgeomatics.com/landrecords/Default.aspx

You have to install an Adobe Active X viewer, takes about a minute, no reboot.

So tell me what you are looking for and I will help. As I work for the California Department of Transportation I can get answers with a few emails from all over the state.

I have some things I want to build and I have to move my temp powerpole to a simi-permenant location and I want to only move it once. I would like to know (as close as possible) the exact corners of my property. I have the APN#. As you know the desert is a big open area and it's not already sectioned off, so it's hard to know where my property starts and my neighbor's property ends.

Rebbi,

This is where we go off the Eplaya on certain stuff. PM me the county and APN and I will see what I can do.

If anyone is interested in how I MIGHT be able to track down property corners in a CA desert then keep the thread going. At this point it will be a records search and possible going out and kicking some dirt. Too early to tell. But I have a clue. Rebbi has a power pole. Electrical utilities have way better off-road records than Caltrans. And he has an APN, an Assessors Parcel Number. This gives me maps that show other property corners set in the area, maybe. A desert location, all bets are off. May go back to the original 1800 something division of land. At this point, helping the Rebbi is a Maybe, if the cards fall right. I have to admit that it is very nice that I might be able to use my knowledge to help a bud.
