Mt. Hood, Aaaagain

Post by unjonharley » Mon Feb 19, 2007 8:43 am

Three clmbers are stuck on the mountain.. The 8500ft level..Search teams know where they are ..7&mph winds and night fall drove the searchers back.. The lost got off track and into the Rock creek area..More teams are coming in this morning..

The real pisser is they took there black Lab with then..Radio contact said th dog was helping keep them warm.

I think the dog deserves some sort of an award, since he(?) was keeping them warm while they waited to be rescued. Maybe a nice steak or something the dog will appreciate.

...I rescued a couple w/a dog trapped on a backcountry mountain several years ago. Back then I was a big MRE fan w/ heater packs (no stopping for hot food). The people got tuna casserole (yuck!). The dog got the ham slice (dog kept them alive). They were snow-boarders. Who takes a dog snowboarding? In the back country? But they were glad they did....and so was I.

what is it with Hood? Well winter ascents are inherently dangerous. Thanks for dogs!

Eat the dog, first.

Hood is one of the most climbed in the world..These people broke through a snow shelf that five others of there party had waked over.. I would like to know why there party went off and left then..I understand they were all rock climbers but not mmountain.. In my usetoyears I could climb and treke any where..When I hear someone is stuck my juices start to flow..Then I remember all my lines are old and like me are not ready to go..

Hood is climbed so much because it is 90 minutes from downtown Portland and is a great climb.

I think it is the access that makes it so desireable. Rainier, is a taller mountian but an easier climb. It also is harder to get too taking usually 2 days to climb and return t minimum. Hood can be done on a day trip.

There is a huge difference between backcountry skiing and climbing a big mountain like Mount Hood. Hell, I even saw a guy who rigged up a harness to let his 2 alaskan huskies pull him up the hill. They loved it. Some breeds are made for snow and cold, others aren't. Before I judged their wisdom of bringing a Lab on the climb I'd like to know more about the route.

It was a walking climb..I stand corrected.. The rest of the climb team spent the night on the hill above the fallen..The searcher had to approch from a different direction to bring the three out..

Never the less my setter froze the tip of his nose..He would sleep in the dog house with just his nose out..The vet bill was unbelievable The poddle had to wear shoes in the cold after frost bite..Just like me.. Lost the tip of a finger to frost bit..Played in the snow to long..

hooooooo hmmmm.... this is why I value dogs more than alot of people. What I don't get is Hood...It's only about as big as Lassen around 10,000 ft.
I guess I gota go there sometime but not in the winter...
now if you want extremely crazy stupid brutal...try Denali in the winter time.... perpetual darkness, 100 + below zero. Vern Tejas did it. Met him once.

The hardest mountains that I ever climbed were the ones that I had made out of molehills.

This is as far as I'll go up Mt. Hood..unless I'm skiing... Was a little disappointed that the interior was vastly different from the movie..but loved it nonetheless. Awesome sculptures! Also loved the huge fireplace..

One is wise to respect the mountain. Any mountain.

the mountains are the domain of the Gods!

We must respect them both!

Go to the mountain, pray on the mountain, play on the mountain, be wise of the mountain!

Or die on the mountain!
