Should I stay or should I go?

Post by Rob the Wop » Tue Sep 11, 2007 5:15 pm

Alright, so I'm actually giving some thought into hitting BM again. I said 'No more" after 2004 (previous attendences were 97,98,99,03,04). Spent my vacation time in 2005 doing the PCH cruise in a convertible from the Puget Sound in Wa to LA, 2006 was my sabbatical backpacking through Europe for 3 months, and 2007 was a return to Europe with my best friend for two+ weeks through Brussels/Amsterdam/Interlaken/Florence/Rome.

I'm saving up for me and Janie to hit Tuscany/Sicily/Greece in 2009, and for a bunch of us to hit Amsterdam/Munich in 2010.

Janie can't afford to go anywhere next year, I don't want to spend a lot of money on vacation, my relatives (mom/dad/brother) aren't in the picture at the moment for visiting, so it would just be me going somewhere by myself. I got three weeks to spend, and its a use it or lose it for us salary types. One week at BM and two scattered about the year.

So I've gone through the internalizing about going back as it would be cheaper than travel and I know people there I can hang with, or can go off on my own if things annoy me. Plus being a previous desert rat, it might behoove me to check it out again. It wouldn't be a balls-to-the-wall art outing, like in far previous years. I would just be coming by myself, parking out in a quiet area, and checking things out. Maybe helping someone else's projects out. Any work I would do would most likely be pre-work on other people's stuff they are bringing out.

So, in a nutshell, talk to me. Why should I? Why shouldn't I?

The fact that you gotta ask probably means you should not go. Once you're going no matter what, that's when you should accept it and go. "If there is doubt, there is no doubt."

RtW I remember talking to you at the M&G in '04.

To answer you have to ask -- How angry/sad/disillusioned are you at the extent to which the event has changed since you got fed up. From what I understand all the things that drive the old timers bat shit have only gotten worse: More rules, more cops, more MOOP, more of a sense of entitlement.

will these rankle you? will it give you a persistent uncomfortable itch? These things I didn't notice my first year, although I'm sure they existed. By my 5th year they were very noticeable to me. I didn't go last year, partly because of that, but mostly we just wanted a break. But even before the theme was announced we were talking about going in '08, and part of my project will be to let things slide off my back that might otherwise get my goat.

I'd like you to go, but mostly 'cuz I was too drunk to properly appreciate the reindeer fucker the first time.

Amsterdam/Munich seems like a weird combo of a trip. Unless it's during Oktoberfest I'd suggest exchanging Munich for either Berlin or Hamburg

Just get quiet within yourself and ask "The Force" for guidance. You'll probably end up somewhere like nowhere, which is over there! Perhaps a EuroBurn would do you good!

Nope, I debated Berlin briefly. Very briefly, the first time I went to Germany. Munich has far better food and beer, plus Dachau and Neuschwanstein Castle of Mad King Ludwig nearby. I wouldn't want to hit Munich during Oktoberfest, the Germans would be great- but the frat boy tourista would drive me bat shit. My buddies might have different ideas though.

Ah, but Berlin is near Sachsenhausen, I always figured that had to be the cool concentration camp that all the Cabaret performers went to. I don't know, Munchen is the only German city that I know even slightly (my Oma used to live out past Donnerburgebrucke) and I'm only obsessed with Sachsenhausen because one of my names is Sachs.

Yeah, it makes a difference if you're planning according to food and beer. To me, Berlin was like one giant piece of graffiti.... good graffiti.

Also, they have two conjoined nightclubs connected by a pool; that's gotta count for something.

I guess its a tomato / tomahtoe thing.

Amster??? AMSTER?!?!?

Dam!

There's one way to find out. Get your ticket, show up. If you realize you shouldn't have, you can leave. If you don't, and half way thru it, you realize you shoulda went, but you're in, say, St Tropez or Perth or something, then it'd suck to be in yer shoes.

But don't ask me - I got property issues that are gonna hit me next year, and I may get stuck going to Umbria about the time of BRC (It's the end of the Italian Vacation Season, so paperwork may not get too lost.) (HA HA HA ha hahaha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaa oooh.)

And I thought watching them hand type marriage licenses on a 30's Corona Typewriter in Mazatlan - for them it really *was* state of the art - was a laugh.

Seriously, tho, I am entering negotiations for the remaining piece of property there (it's right in the middle of what we already own - stupid fucking antiquated Roman property title system - grumble grumble) and timing is really everything. Peh!

And yes, Zsu Zsu would feel right at home as an Italian Civil servant. Too bad she's Parisian...

Fuckit. Go. Any questions?
