So back when the third or fourth book in the Wheel of Time series came out I read it and was left pissed off. Not only was the series not finished, but the writing was going down hill, quickly. I was caught up in the characters but feeling grumpy about the progression of the quality and my own perception that Jordan was padding the hell out of the story. Like you say, he could have used an editor that wasn't married to him. Then I realized that he could die before finishing the series, and that would suck.

So, right then, I decided that I'd read no more series until after the last entry had been published. This was 10 years ago or so and I've stuck with that decision ever since. Even my favorite authors (Bujould for one example) aren't exempt. And, while I try to never celebrate a death, I am entertained that the author who made me swear off series for fear that the writer may die before finishing the work, has died before finishing his work.

I never was able to get started on the first book of the series, then got scarred off by the sheer number of books.

Anyway, the rumor I heard was Robert Jordan was working hard to finish the the last book, and had a lot of notes so his survivors could finish it in case he died before he got done. (Or at least that is what is being said on a role playing game forum I am on.)

Dammit, Ron, I almost have the same rule. But I'll break it for my pet authors, including: Kim Stanley Robinson, George RR Martin, Kage Baker (although I'm really tired of Mendoza) and probably a dozen others. I was amazed at how quickly I found Jordan's last book on the library shelves, I thought he'd be reserved for more months, but I only started the series because I found the first 7 books in a thrift store for fifty cents each. And padded is putting it mildly. So it's a good rule, if you can make yourself follow it.

Just remind yourself that War and Peace was originally meant as a prequel...
