Meathope minced beef contained no beef, according to DNA tests
TOMAKOMAI, Hokkaido -- Samples of "100 percent beef" minced meat taken from the meat company at the center of a food safety scandal here contained no beef whatsoever, according to DNA tests by police.
The former president of financially troubled Meathope , Minoru Tanaka, 69, and three other former executives conspired to mislabel about 140 tons of minced beef mixed with other kind of meat as pure beef, and sold it over a one-year period until June this year, local police said.
Investigators commissioned experts to conduct DNA tests on about 100 samples taken from the company or provided by customers, and found that some of them contained no beef at all.
None of the samples were 100 percent beef as labeled, and they contained chicken, rabbit and duck meat as well as pork and mutton.
The company netted about 65 million yen from its sale of the 140 tons of mislabeled minced meat.
Local police are considering serving fresh arrest warrants, accusing the four of fraud over cases in which they can confirm that the victims were swindled.

you think that's odd, there's a bio engineering lab that wants to make synthetic meat. Yeah that's right. Synth-meat.

I used to be against the whole lab grown meat thing, but then I started thinking about it and it occured to me that the meat wouldn't be running around getting exercise. I think veal is very tasty; I haven't eaten it in at least twenty years.

I don't get it...why didn't they just label them "minced chicken, rabbit, duck, pork and mutton mix"???Ugly Dougly wrote:None of the samples were 100 percent beef as labeled, and they contained chicken, rabbit and duck meat as well as pork and mutton.
That sounds delicious!!!! Imagine how burgers made with that would have tasted. Mmmmmm.....menagerilicious
If it's made out of synthetic proteins (I'm assuming you're not talking tofu-based stuff 'cause that's just flavored soybeans no matter what you call it.) Would synthetic proteins be considered vegan? Where do you draw the line with that stuff?cowboyangel wrote:you think that's odd, there's a bio engineering lab that wants to make synthetic meat. Does sizzle-lean have a "bacon number?"
I just found out what a "bacon number" was a couple of minutes ago.
Everything you (maybe) always wanted to know about "The Degrees of Bacon"
