Unless these people have their heads buried in the sand or up someone else's ass they would know that Twitter is having serious scalability problems right now. It's become so bad that open source competitors are springing up and if Twitter doesn't get their act together they'll be joining the likes of Beenz and Pets.com.

This whole idea of "fixing" Tribe looks like it's going to turn into a textbook case of how to kill off a great concept...death by a thousand fuckups.....

and if you cant, here's the article she picked up anyway:

Tribe.net: Going the way of Friendster?

http://sfweekly.com/2008-09-24/news/tri ... friendster

By Bonnie Ruberg
Published on September 24, 2008

Started back in 2003, San Francisco–based Tribe.net was a social network for proud freaks. With a user base of more than half a million that once rivaled MySpace, Tribe acquired a reputation for welcoming artsy, alternative communities, especially here in the Bay Area. These days, however, the site that once proudly counted leather daddies, psytrance DJs, and Burning Man fans among its members has fallen on hard times.

After two CEO changes in the last five years, the site saw considerable downtime this summer — an inconvenience that frustrated members, to say the least. Then Darren Mckeeman, one of only two full-time Tribe employees, handed in his resignation. That left users worrying whether their freak haven might be shut down forever.

They aren't willing to go down without a fight, though — or at least a few good complaints. The personal blog of Mark Pincus, Tribe.net's founder and owner, is packed with comments like this one: "Keep Tribe up! ... Do it, because you're a douchebag if you don't, and a hero if you do." Try to reach someone at Tribe for comment and it begins to feel like the site might indeed be shutting down. E-mails bounce back, and the phone has been disconnected.

Eventually we were able to track down Pincus. These days his main project is his social game company, Zynga, but he still calls the shots for Tribe. From his office in Potrero Hill, he explained Tribe's business history, which has become the stuff of rumors for its users: two rounds of capital investment, three CEOs, and a period of bankruptcy. Since 2003, the site team has gone from 30 people to five to two and now one.

Despite the fear many have that blogs they've created or photos they've uploaded may be lost, Pincus insists that Tribe isn't going anywhere anytime soon, despite the recent downtime. "I feel a commitment to the community of people who have made the decision to post themselves on Tribe," he says. "We've kept Tribe going not because we believed it would turn into a phenomenal business success like Bebo or Facebook, but because I think it serves a really valuable role for the community."

Even if Pincus isn't trying to compete with Facebook — Zynga makes the majority of its games for that site — his Tribe users are leaving for Facebook and other social networking giants all the same. Consider the Haight-Ashbury resident who recently posted he was moving to a more reliable site and giving up on the freak show forever.

The trouble with quoting that post verbatim: As of this writing, Tribe is down.

The comments are even better:
too bad. It's sad in a way, because like friendster, tribe was a pioneer in social networking sites. As myspace has become the de-facto for local bands and music, yelp the standard for bar and restaurant reviews, facebook for careerists, and facebook for purely social networking...

Tribe was there first, doing all of those things before any of those other sites existed.

If Mark Pincus is that concerned with the perpetuation of Tribe it might sserve him well to Log Into His Account and Use the Blkog on His Tribe Profile instead of blogging someplace that has no relation to Tribe.
He used to Participate, now he stands outside the door and down the street and says he cares. he can bloody well prove it.

Apologising to Darren would be a good place to start.

This was exactly my point at the eplaya webteam meetings years ago when the new eplaya went up. Technopatra, (God do I miss her here.) also felt the same way.
It was one of the only main reasons I started to participate on eplaya.
It's the only way to get a feel for what the community is and needs are.
You just gotta dive in.
Most that create or deploy CMS's dont participate on them because they feel it's just stupid and they just dont have the time to "play on the computer".
This is very very common.

P.S. i dont know Darren personally but I do understand how Pincus would call Darren names. I dont get as much room to wiggle as Darren did.
He had a year to come up with and implement solutions. I only get at max a few months. In most cases only a few weeks at best.

I met Mark twice. Once when he came to Los Angeles and asked the community how we could make Tribe profitable. He took notes, or so it looked like he was to me.

The second time I met him was when he did an episode of my podcast. There had just been sort of deal with Cisco and he indicated that some good news would be forthcoming within a month of our sitting down to do our interview. But if you call the "premium membership" plan some good news, I have to say "whatev".

However I did pwnie up some money for the premium membership plan because I supported his business, believed in Tribe and wanted to help contribute and make it successful.

Now, almost a year later after what turned out to be "donating to a charitable" cause instead of enjoying a "premium membership" I have to say I'm really disappointed -- not so much that Tribe is business failure (oh well, we tried). I'm disappointed because Tribe has become some bastard child and a ghost ship.

I love Tribe. Like Burning Man, Tribe has introduced me to the most valuable thing in my life: my friends and tribal family. But my experiences on the playa have also taught me a hard lesson: all good things must come to an end.

Note:Mark's interview is available here:

or via iTunes.

I just find it strange how people can get so detached from what they create.
Tho I can see how it can happen. I've done the same thing.

Ok, so in 5 days Bonoboway 2.0 goes online.
There have been significant changes and hopefully we have gotten as many implementations done for as many that have asked for them.
It would be nice if everyone that has become a member, check it out to see what they think and give feedback.
I am so looking forward to this.

Got there this morning, couldn't get there later.

I restarted my Tribe account right before the burn and have had many opportunities to remember why I abandoned it previously.

It sucks. I'm not a huge fan of myspace, but at least it works.

I just don't understand how Tribe, with as many members that it has, and as many different "tribes" that it has, can NOT attract a wider base of advertisers.

More advertisers equals more revenue. More revenue means they can pay for more folks to be on staff and more money to clean up the code.

Fuck Tribe!

I haven't read all the pages here, but anything related to Burning Man seems to be overwhelmed by a select few who will flame anyone they can. If you don't believe me, just check that one thread when they wanted a new moderator to get rid of people they didn't agree with!

The ones protesting the most about sock puppets, are the ones who create the sock puppets themselves.

On tribes unrelated to Burning Man, there seems to be no problem. It's just lonely, old, bitter friendless losers, who create all the hate and discontent on the Burning Man tribes. They've taken what could be a great social interaction, and turned it into their private soap box.

As a matter of fact, I DO know something.

The only reason I didn't outright "name names", is because I've gone through several years of Internet stalking and harassment, by one of the most proliferant offenders out there. Even after I welcomed him into my home, supported him, and pretty much gave him everything I had.

After I got him set up on section 8 housing, food stamps, VA medical care, and countless other things, he turned around and spewed the most vile hatred towards me, my husband, children, and friends.

At least the bastard has BURNED so many bridges, that NO ONE would give him a ride to Burning Man this year, AND he was fired from the DMV because he's a complete asshole that abuses his perceived power.

Oh yeah, and fuck the innuendo crap - his name is JarJar, aka, Michael Steefy..

I disagree with your politics Das Bus, but you're right about the bile on the BM Tribe. Try http://triberefugees.ning.com

a lot of tribe people have set up shop there and so far it is a much friendlier place, though it seems to lack the electricity of tribe.net, for the time being.

I think it might have something to do with Tribe sucking ass. I could be wrong, though.

Please don't misunderstand. A lot of the people on Tribe are great. I'm seen them do some beautiful stuff. But you're looking at a site that seems to be down as often as it's up. Which is going to scare off advertisers, who are going to wonder if the ads they pay for are going to be seen. Which costs Tribe ad revenue. Which eats into Tribe's budget. Which keeps Tribe from hiring more people and fixing things. Which leads to Tribe being down more. Which ...

Vicious circle.

Tribe.net was nice while it lasted. Sadly it was managed by "experts" into the ground just like most American companies.

I seriously dont think Mark Pincus wants Tribe to work.
I can not believe that someone that creates a site like that can not fix the thing. Not only that but if the problem they are having is SAN related or HD/Memory/raid related, that's something that can be fixed in a heartbeat.
I think they are all full of shit.
Offering 90k to someone to take Darren's place?
How about putting the money into equipment?

I think the whole purpose of the premium was to rip people off.

Tribe has been transported back in time to 6/16/2008. Much of my posts are back but most of my blog is missing and pictures too. Oh well. It's my fault. I never click on their advertisers.

Meh!

Well tomorrow, Bonoboway 2.0 comes online.
As usual it is gonna out do everything I have ever been involved with. It will have HD webcam chat and private chat, new games including pacman and all. HD video uploads and downloads. Redundant backup servers and all.
I dont think any of this has been done before.
I guess the 3.0 will be even that much more awesome. Should be entirely hand coded and should have an API and all, but I'm not as excited as I would like to be about it.
Still not enough people and I dont know if I want to even be bothered or want to stick around to see it all happen.
Just seems like a lot of work for nothing.

Not very, from what I've heard. Posts have been vanishing and reappearing, profile icons have been changing themselves, and in general, all has been bizarre. I hear one of the users dropped by Mark Pincus' place to discuss matters.

He seemed kind of pissed.
