Artists Who Have Lost Thier Way

Post by Catwoman69y2k » Sat Jan 12, 2008 2:14 am

No, Im not talking about artists that "sell out" (which of course that term alone can be the subject of many a debate), but rather the artists out there who are burned out, lost thier will/desire to express, and drive to progress. Yes, I know that many artists out there have slumps from no inspiration, get caught up in trying to suppor themselves, and other problems that are more commonplace and on the surface.

What Im talking about is more than that. Its a feeling of spiritual incompleteness from detachement in one's relationship to their creativity and freedom of self expression.

Any ideas on workshops/guidance methods/people that might know about this?

whenever i'm feeling burned out and lower than low, i book a sex junket to thailand and spend two weeks buggering anything over 12 years old, but that's me...you might try drugs, and or gestalt cable tv.

electroshock works sometimes.

Buy a sketchbook and some pencils. Sketch everything that looks interesting to you. Inspiration will come.

Sadly Im beyond that point. I feel no enthusiasm to pick up any of my artists implements. :( I think that the root of the problem is deeper than that.

No artist can lose their way.
My hand moves my own brush.
I am my own canvas, paint, and brush.
Which I fill with color and life.
It is alot like sex,
Some people just don't get it

There's always drugs. Sounds like you need some hopelessness in your life.

Don't fuss. change over to a simple direct medium--finger painting even. Keep playing.

Just my 0000.0010000%.

As an artist, taking a break is a necessary evil. Dont worry about not doing your art for however long it takes. Some great artists take a year and/or more off.

What you find after all the time off is, you appreciate your work more and have more fun with it and most of all, you will most likely produce your best work after the break.

Whatever you do, dont force it too much. You wont be happy.

Maybe try working on something really physical for a while? Or, at any rate, something very different than what you do for art? (I guess what I am suggesting is a variant on the "taking a break to recharge" idea.)

Thanks Bas. That's something I failed to mention though I was thinking it.

I write music. I change up every once in awhile by doing 3D animation and then change again to photography.

Works just fine for me and in the end all of them can work together.

You're welcome. I get my best ideas when I am doing something like pulling trash chutes or hauling garbage. Where I fall down is making myself act on the ideas later, when I actually have the time available. :?

Ah, the forgetting factor.

I try to use my cell phone as a recorder when I remember. Then I have to remember later to listen to all the ideas on the phone afterwards.

Or the tiredness (laziness?) factor. (Oh @#$#! I need to put more minutes onto my cell phone! Thanks for reminding me.)

I am a truck driver and all of my ideas seem to come to me when I am on the road.
I have one of those little mini-cassette recorders in my lunchbox.
I started using it last year before the burn and it made everything a lot easier, the packing, the stuff to do, and even the drive.
I am still kicking myself in the ass for not using one sooner....
Now if I could only find the time to actually follow through with all the little things I have recorded and wtitten down.

I should probably be using the MP3 player my brother gave me for Christmas two years ago for that. It has a voice recording feature..., and I can't seem to make my computer convert my cds to MP3 format. (I need to work on fixing that at some point. Got too many other things ahead of it, though.)

Yeah, I have that function on my MP3 playa and same story, won't syncronize format from computer.
The cassette is easier, you don't have to turn it on first.

Sometimes, there is nothing more to say

Ansel Adams best productive years were before his was 40.

It's like how many images can you take of Old Faithful or Half Dome when you have done what no one else had done before. I have done that on certain subjects and I wish not to ever take another photograph of that subject again. I have made my statement. Though I move on to other subjects and try to envision what others had not. When you can't even do that its time to move on to another occupation. Like a cop or dea agent that has lied and can't come up with now lies to live. You quit and get another profession or you get forced into an early retirement.

PS- what happened to the delete button. Oop, that was on another network I guess?
I might be green, but I can burn brite with the help of my playa friends!

You don't have tto do them all. Think of it as a culling process, a refining process...

you sound like you need a nice regular butt-kicking physical group workout; I recommend Bikram, spin class, or some power aerobics classwork. Do it, you will mentally physically and spiritually benefit.

Based on the local print ads for a place called "funky door yoga" I was convinced that bikram was to make you ready for anal sex.

Catwoman69y2k,

I do not claim to be an artist except maybe of the BS type but when I get stuck on one thing, I go off and do something else. Which probably explains why my bathtub is only half caulked for the past month. After a half hour of my 6’ 4â€

Strictly from an artistic point of view, drugs and alcohol are a good first step. They should help get you going toward that self-destructive troubled existence that spawns all the greatest art. And when you die (of un-natural causes), your work will become valuable and classic.
