I hate sock puppets because. . .
This is a good thread for me. I post as either of two ID's This one and SED. At first, I did this just for the simple kick of having another ID--like a mask or a costume. Then it seemed like I'd post as one or the other depending on my mood or attitude. But it got confusing.
I never double posted with the intent of creating drama, or dodging responsibility, or whatever motive drives some other sock puppeteers. Well, at least I hope that's true. It got confusing, y'see.
So now I'm with Stuart. It isn't just because of the problems that make the eplaya less fun. It's a general impulse in my life to get real.
I won't get into all the personal stuff, uless someone wants to know about it. They can PM for that. It's just that I think I can be more effective and definitely more appealing as one consistent self.
There's also a matter of trust. I feel I can trust certain entities, like Stuart, Lydia and Angry Butterfly, because you've been consistent. I haven't been so egregiously flaky so as to feel guilty about what I've said, but it all comes back to what Stuart said: Why can't we be ourselves?
Well, I guess it's fun to play dress up, but at some point you have to get real. Is eplaya the place to be real? Could be, if we wanted it.
It's a bold question, Stuart. Why can't we all stay sober all the time? Why do women wear make up? Why do men fall into the ugly dance of macho posturing? I'm not accusing you of anything, but I have to ask you if you are as real and genuine all the time as you would have others be?
It's hard to ask a question like that without feeling judgemental, so if you felt judged, I did my best not to but could help it.
If I was really myself, would anyone like me? Maybe fewer people like me because I'm always someone else? Ouch!
If anyone's followed my posts, they'll know I have a baby boy. Each day it becomes more clear to me that of all the people I have to be straight with, he tops the list. He's completely naive and he'll take what I say as truth. And of course, there's my wife, who doesn't go to BM and won't ever go, either. So there's an added level of honesty. Can't tell her too much or she'll get bored and irritated. Can't do so much that I'll have something not to tell.
Whatever happened to Flux, anyway?

So long as what your sister was wearing:

was not a lie
it is highly probable

salvagable.
That is, however just ~me~.
There are 29,996 others on the playa whom whom might also want a PIECE OF YOUR ASS ~snikt~ for using a partial/multiple false name! YOU BASTARD!

to asnwer you sed, I am as much myself here as I am in conversation with friends. My posts sound like I talk in RL (save for the occasional abbreviation). I do moderate my behavior in my workplace. It's more of a cesorship thing than a behaving as other thing. I also do the same, to a much lesser degree with my parents. Other than those two groups, everybody pretty much gets the same treatment. I even tell my wife when I think she has bought a hideous pair of shoes (more frequently than she would like I am sure). Perhaps this makes me selfish or lazy.
as far as you tancorix, well, we all know you have had as many ID's on this board as I have fingers so I will take your comments in an appropriate context.
I am cursious though, when you post under a different ID, what is that like? Do you have different opinions, traits, attitudes? Is it hard to keep straight? What makes you choose one over the other? Isn't it a pain in the ass? Non-puppetears want to know!

Dear Sylvia,
I was being sarcastic. You are not a bastard. 29,996 others also do not use a full real name.
Few on the eplaya/playa volunteer a full real name to strangers. The ones that do may call us cowardly from their vantage, but can anyone else? The person whom started this thread? Would this thread have been started by the same author using his/her real full name & city location? Or would they have imagined repercussions from an angry mob of sock puppets?
I am nipples, for instance.
nipples is a pen-name of ~me~, because i choose not to use my
full real name, allowing me a degree of anonimity. Yes, I could say the exact same things under my real full name & city location, etc... but probably would not.
I am also amnesia, and paps. And on the old bbs, lucky & eroto, & fishspanker. They are all innocuous.. not causing harm.
I do not make nom-de-plumes (sp!) for the purpose of building conscensus, but to converse with one another, or when i feel nipples has had too much exposure & will grow tiresome.
It is a wild wacky world out there, and I am glad that Sylvia was in it for a while.
Again, bear in mind that very few burners use their real full name, change it often, etc..... but it is always, in my humble opinion (imho), an excercise, a stretch to gain the best person you/i could be if we only let ourselves. MAybe even "ugly" authors get to see what it is like to be ugly? Or we do? Dunno!
I do understand the frustration of reading people that are angry, mean or trollish, but their name is irrelevant to the content they have chosen to "provide" (that is, to ME, it does not matter whom says what, only what is said). Excepting of course that they probably would not be as "out there" if there were no false names allowed.... identifiable & having the chance of knowing a knock on the door. Ditto with peace-lovers throwing flower petals at our feet. They might not take that chance, either.
Would you (the person reading this) have made each post exactly as you have in the past without your mask on?
See ya on the funny pages!

It's an interesting thought, that by picking *any* nom de plume you are hiding behind a false identity... and one I don't think is necessarily true. I've been posting as Lydia Love for... hmmm... not sure. A couple of years anyway.
I don't automatically give out *all* my info, last name, location, phone number and address because there is that possiblity that someone out there would use that info to give me grief. However, there are eplayans out there that *have* been given all that info. I don't think it's dishonest to pick and choose who I give that kind of access to my life.
However, as far as access to *me* as a person, my personality, my thoughts yadda yadda yadda... I've decided to be the real me here. Including my faults, contradictory statements and opinions, snit fits, overreactions etc etc etc. I didn't always do this. It used to be that when I thought my opinion would likely be unpopular I'd just shut the fuck up and keep it to myself. I've decided not to do that anymore. If I think it I'll say it and sometimes that means I have to apologize to someone just a little bit later. Lydia Love is as much me as Lydia Ratcliffe.
Anywho... I'm just beating a dead horse here. Y'all know by know what my opinion is. But just so you know, I don't *hate* anyone using multiple sock puppets. I'm just not that *interested* in talking to all of them.

2) If I posted under a fake identity that I was a candidate for taking over Burning Man regional group responsibility as well as the ethical framework for posting to the eplaya (ha), and then whined all over the eplaya about an alleged emergency that must be solved by [someone else, of course] removing that fake identity, and yet all my annoying posts remained from that previous identity, and (who the hell knows) probably a few other fake IDs, would I even want to show my duplicitously mendacious fake fuckface on the eplaya at all ever again?
1) How does one achieve the status of "Guest" (see p.1), exactly, and continue to act like one?

It just makes me sad. I was young and happy. Probably before I got married. Oh yeah, definitely before I got married. Trying to fit in. And confused.
