Y'know, Simon, that sounds very similar to this---
Know what I'd like to see? Someone, from any party, who's in it to do the damned job. Whose only re-election campaign consists of a single ad that goes something like this...

"Hi, I'm ________, I'm your ___________. I could be out wasting my time, your time and YOUR money campaigning, answering whatever ads anyone else who wants this office puts out. I'm not gonna do that. Instead, I'm gonna do the job I was elected to do--which doesn't include spending your money trying to get myself another term. I think I'm doing a good job, and if you think so too, you'll re-elect me. If you don't think I've been doing a good job them I've got no right to spend your money trying to convince you otherwise. I truly hope you'll let me continue to work for you. Thank you.

I'm ________________ and I approved this message."

We pay McCain, and Obama, and Biden, and Palin to DO stuff--not to campaign...

They've talking endlessly about this on right wing radio.

They've been bemoaning the fact that if congress does something, and the people don't like it, McCain will get the blame. And if congress fails to act, and the whole thing collapses, McCain will get the blame. And if it all works out, Reid and Pelosi will say that McCain didn't matter and he'll look like a fool.

It's like this can't work out good for him--so why is he doing it?

Could it be that he doesn't care? That he thinks that something needs to be done and he's doing it--regardless of how it'll be spun?

Looking at what you're all saying the people on Rush and Beck and whatever are right--this isn't doing him any good....so why is he doing it?

Maybe because it's his job?

Because he's "trying" to look presidential during a week that his actions have said just the opposite. Another failed attempt, IMO.

Anyone see David Letterman last night? It is obvious that him 'suspending' his campaign is nothing other than a political ploy. For those that don't know, he personally called Letterman to cancel his appearance so that he could go back and save the country because the ecomony 'is tanking'. Then he was caught doing the katie Couric interview. Letterman was HOT! (as in mad) and boy he used that heat to roast McCain. Isn't often you see a person's true colors exposed on national television.

McCain is starting to dip in the polls. He knows he's going to lose the upcoming debate just because he doesn't know what is the problem with America.

GW Bush has come out and contradicted him on the fundamentals of our economy making him look like a fool.

They know that if he gets into a heated debate with a scholarly debate winning Harvard grad such as Obama he is going to come off a complete idiot. McCain has only one-liners that do well on the campaign, but not in a debate.

So now not only Palin will be given silence treatment he too knows it may be better for his campaign if he boycotts them all!

Yes, he's chicken shit that why he was a pilot in Nam.

should it be inferred, then, that you can only be a good president if you're a good debater, master debater, as such...........hahahaha

I'm a little confused by your last statement, though.

you say he's chicken shit for being a pilot,

then, say you'd rather be 10,000 feet.................

in essence, agreeing with his choice?

I'd submit, in war, you need pilots. I'd submit you need ground troops.
I'd also say one is no more important than the other............

Candidates debate. That's what they do in order to show the electorate what their views are in contrast to their opponent's. His responsibility towards that committment comes first.

He's not the President, not yet. There are hundreds of senators and congressmen ready to take up his "slack". The crisis will continue after this weekend.

It is a ploy, and probably Bush will call them both together on Friday to keep it from looking lke the Republican welshed on his deal.

I agree, UD.
And, I agree a debate is a good vehicle to compare candidates.

I just think it's not the only one,

I know a lot of very brilliant people who don't think fast, and, in a debate, would get creamed.............

Zogby just announced that McCain/Palin, down 4 yesterday, are up 2 today....that's a 6 point shift......maybe this will work for them....

funny, ain't it, how this debate seems to have taken such primacy? People saying things like the crisis will still be there....can you imagine....

'...the house is burning--we have to put it out! Let's put it out as fast as we can!'

'But we've got dinner resevations at the best restaurant in the universe--the house is big. It'll still be there after we eat. These reservations were real hard to get.'

'But it's the HOUSE!!!?!!!'

'Don't worry, let's go eat. There are other people who can take care of it. Besides, if they need us, they'll call'

Seems like someone's priorities are a bit, oh, I dunno, backwards.

McCain debating against Obama?

Seems that we have one of those "don't think too fast (at any time)" presidents now and look what it's gotten us. I personally would want someone that could first THINK, then THINK FAST on their feet when dealing with world leaders and other such crisis. Remember Bush just sitting for what seemed forever in a stupor when he was told about the first plane crashing into the WTC?

I'd like to see an intelligent, quick thinking man (or woman) in office for a change.

Why would I not quote a Klingon? Barbarian horde, remember? Empire and all that, remember?
OK, declare an emergency whenever the going gets rough. That'll fool the important swing votes.
McCain declared an emergency? When? I thought he was responding to all those major financial institutions collapsing--what's the emergency, JohnnyMac, we thick voters stand ready to assist. We'll deal with that financial crisis-thingy later.
Seems that we have one of those "don't think too fast (at any time)" presidents now and look what it's gotten us. I personally would want someone that could first THINK, then THINK FAST on their feet when dealing with world leaders and other such crisis.
Yeah. Like that guy who said 'call me' as a crisis erupted all around him--'I'm busy campaigning'. That was quick thinking.

I'm glad it wasn't one of those slow people--why someone like that might've thought FAST on their feet when dealing with world leaders and other such crisis. And then where would we be?

Doing the job we're getting PAID to do and not gallivanting around on the campaign trail. Gallivanting is important for those quick thinkers. They even probably know what it means--take THAT, John McCain.
Remember Bush just sitting for what seemed forever in a stupor when he was told about the first plane crashing into the WTC?

Right--just like saying 'call me' when a crisis erupts. It's like he had no idea what to do. I mean, he just sat there--he didn't rush back to Washington and do the job he's paid to do or anything. I think he spent the day gallivanting around on Air Force One(hey, do you think Obama was there to explain to him what 'gallivanting meant? 'Cos I'm damned sure Bush has no idea)
I'd like to see an intelligent, quick thinking man (or woman) in office for a change.
Not in this country, bub. The intelligent, quick thinking people are all out in BRC--being President would screw up the burn. And what would the Secret Service say if you got into a nice shirtcocking mood(hey, does anyone else find it creepy that the Secret Service is abbrieviated as 'SS'? You'd think, after WW2, they would have done something about that)?

lurker, the only comment I will make regarding your post is that neither Obama or McCain are on the committees that are negotiating on the finance buy out. THERE IS NOTHING EITHER OF THEM CAN DO AT THIS STAGE AND NO NECESSITY FOR EITHER OF THEM TO BE THERE EXCEPT FOR GRAND STANDING. The only thing they will be able to do when an agreement is reached is to vote on it.

Which reminds me--which of the two candidates missed more votes while they were "galavanting" around on the campaign trail?

You can galavant all you want--I'll stick to gallivanting.

And I don't care who missed more votes--I don't like EITHER of them. I think they're both pretty useless.

But, they DO need to be there to vote, yes?

And, y'know, I feel a lot better if the person who's gonna be handling this financial crisis as the next president takes, I dunno, an interest? Y'know?

Oh, I suppose you're right, congress is running in circles, the government actually looks panicky--but the important thing is having that debate right on schedule.

Dear god, you chide Bush for not 'leaping to' when the first plane hit the WTC when he could do nothing but talk about what had happened--and you applaud Obama for saying 'call me'. McCain DID what you claim to have wanted Bush to do--rush in ineffectually.

Jeez, I'm getting dizzy. You all hafta make up your minds. If Obama was smart for what he did, then Bush was smart for what he did, and McCain was dumb for what he did, but if Bush was dumb for what he did then McCain was smart for what he did and Obama was dumd for what he did. You've gotta be internally consistent

So you gotta tell me--

not doing something--- smart / dumb

doing something--- smart / dumb

...because I've got this sneaking suspicion that diong something AND not doing something are both dumb--if the person in question has an 'R' after his/her name.

And I'm offended that you didn't comment on my Klingon.

This may be the only time I will defend McCain. I was a grunt in Vietnam and we were flown into the jungles in helicopters (combat assaults they were called). Let me tell you, it was pretty scary coming in and the pilots were in as much jeopardy as were the troops they were carrying. At least when you were on the ground you could find cover.

Additionally, it is my understanding that McCain could have been released earlier but asked if everyone would be released; upon the answer being no, he decided to stay as a prisoner with his men.

That's pretty admirable if the story is true. That being said, I don't see how any of that experience is a qualification for being president.

Ad hominem attacks never really pay off, perhaps you have noticed?
But he sounds like he is pincking over the economy.

He said it's about to crater! Run for the hills!

They call it a political "campaign" because it's like fighting a war. You don't suspend it unless you have your hand on a white towel. Another strategic blunder on his part.
