Anyways, here's what we've got planted and are planning to plant (a few things waiting for hotter weather). With just a couple of exceptions, everything is or will be direct-seeded. A few are perennials that have overwintered on the balcony, and a few were bought as bedding plants this year.
- Veg: Lettuce, peas, rapini, arugula, cayenne peppers, carrots, tomatoes.
Herbs: Rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano, chives, garlic chives, spearmint.
Ornamentals: Poppies (I guess we could ensure we'd enjoy starving to death...), tulips, cornflowers, sweet peas, pansies (edible), cup & saucer vine, cup flower, pheasant's eye, sempervivums, a bunch of different grasses, heliotropes, sweet williams. All black, red, and purple this year.
The lettuce, arugula, rapini, and cornflowers have all come up in the last 2 days, which is very exciting for me!
Our gardening philosophy is basically "Darwinian." We direct-seed pretty-much everything, including tomatoes and peppers. We do shelter the tenderest things (tomatoes and peppers) with pop-bottle and garbage-bag "greenhouses" if there's a cold snap in the spring, but I mostly let nature take its course. I'm not that fussy about planting dates, either, as I find that most seeds will happily lie dormant until the soil temperature tells them the world is ready for them. Anything that doesn't survive/thrive, I don't grow again. (I know we'd do better if we seeded things indoors, hardened them off properly, and transplanted them outside, but we're lazy and don't have a lot of indoor space. We just overseed and let the strongest survive).
