"As the crow flies" has always been a confusing thing for me, as they only fly in a straight line when they are running from my BB gun.

What kind of hand over foot sort of measurement system is implied here ?

there's your problem:

you take it as a measurement, (perhaps to be compared by crossing swords), when, it's merely a pathway.........or direction........

A hoot and a holler is about 2 miles as the crow flies if it don't rain and the creek don't rise. Mind the stumps and rocks down the slopes and over the ridges. Easier to run the ridgetops than go cross country on a bee line. I always follow the deertrails rather than the cow trods. It's easier to dodge the pellets than the meadow muffins. You can't rollerskate in a buffalo herd.
