Walking on Fire

Post by shroom » Thu Jun 17, 2010 9:24 am

Ok burners. Has anyone here ever walked on fire? I have many times and it has changed my life. If you have....where did you do it at? Was it a spiritual experience or just a mind over matter deal?

If you are curious,

I'm hoping that seeing the man burn will be a similar experience for me. There is something awesome about being around fire.

Just don't try walking on the coals of the Man. Not safely raked, full of scary sharp pointy things. I think one guy tried it, fell, and died in the Reno hospital?

I wouldn't try that! Just excited to see the man burn!

I hope no one tries to walk on fire unless they are doing it with a trained instructor. Safety first!

then roll around in the coals of the man....or get shot by flamethrowers. Either way is instant win.

People get altered and are drawn into the flames without rational thought. That's why there is a perimeter of rangers, to keep the worst of the fools at bay. "We have a runner!" Last year I saw them tackle some guy who was headed in well before the Man was engulfed and the perimeter released. The rangers had kept him back and sat him back down in the crowd a couple times, but this guy was determined to be stupid. The Man is cool, but he's one dangerous motherfucker.

People do it - and survive! I don't know of anyone having done this at Burning Man, but that doesn't mean that no one has done it.

In '08 i saw a guy get up and make a break for the man, he got past the rangers and about 20 feet from the man, trips and face plants into the playa. I hadn't laughed so hard all week....wait i prolly did, but still.

I really wanted to know if anyone has done this ever. I would hope if they do it at burning man, it is under the supervision of a professional instructor.

I've done it many times and am just curious to hear other people's experience.

The problem with walking fire at Burning Man is mostly a matter of logistics and clean up. You can't put the coals directly on the playa, you'd have to bring something to keep them on, and all that ash would be major MOOP if it got windy. Then haul all the crap back out. And then you'd have to deal with people who just would not listen to the instructor. Not that it couldn't be done, but it would have to be done by someone with resources and a passion for safety.

You may be conflating two instances. There was a guy who walked onto the man coals who fell and was injured and then sued. Scott pulled someone out of a fire in 1999, 2000 or 2001 who was airlifted to Reno and died there.

It always amuses me when people say their life has been changed by a carny trick like fire-walking or psychic cold reading. Does it ever happen with other sideshow tricks?

Well now, that may actually be true depending on your aim and trajectory.
