Judgement

Post by AnyPlace » Thu Aug 19, 2010 9:41 am

How does one go about defeating expectation?

If experience and reason determine a persons judgements about themselves, and the representations of their physical enviroments (people, ideas, space, relation, etc.), then wouldn't it stand to reason that the interpretation of said representations, judgements, is an expectation in an of itself, simply because of the necessity of our interaction(s) with the physical world?

I ask these questions because I realize that I've been struggling a lot with the expectations of judgement. So much so, that I have been placing expectations in judgement as a means of governing, not only the interpretations of my own experiences, but the representations of the experiences around me . It seems, I've placed myself in a box I never thought I'd find myself in. Help.

Don't arrive at the event with a lot of "scenarios" in your head about what you think is going to happen, what you are going to do, or how things are going to be. Worry about getting yourself set up and let things be what they are. You can attempt to influence the space immediately surrounding you but the event itself is a synergy of thousands of individual actions. It just is what it is.

It is sort of a personification of quantum uncertainty. If you go into it knowing that you have no idea how things are going to be, you will be fine. If you have a lot of scenarios that mean a lot to you in your head, then maybe you are sowing disappointment seeds. Some of those just might sprout.

Could you please put your 2nd question, "If experience and reason determine..." in layman's terms? Also, are you asking about expectations about the Burning Man event itself or about psychology in general?

Expect to not be judged. And do not expect anything else.

You probably won't be able to purge all of your expectations so go with the next best thing. Start by trying to reduce the number of expectations dancing around in your head. Ideally try to reduce it to one.

One single expectation.

How? Start with guzzling a half bottle of Maker's Mark and chase with two 30mg controlled-release capsules of Dilaudid.

Expect to get fucked up.

Hope that helps.

In my past, there existed an extreme amount of judgment, righteous indignation, expectation of compliance,,,, all that bullshit society in general and religion in particular stuffs in our heads. No need for details, but suffice it to say, I came to the conclusion in my head,,,, and dared to say it out loud,,,, at a family reunion,,,,, "I GIVE UP!"

Since then, I've simply lived life as it comes and try to take each day for everything it offers; because none of us know what tomorrow will bring. And to expect or judge one's self to be a certain way or do a certain thing right is usually a blue print for failure.

We try to accomplish things and many of them succeed, at least more than fail, hopefully. But gratefulness is my bread and butter. I focus on being thankful for someone even acknowledging my presence. I thank my equipment at work for actually doing what it is supposed to do when I use it,,, I thank my associates and friends for simply being a part of my life. Because all of it is a blessing when I don't expect any of it.

Now judgment really has two meanings,,,, and I'm not sure what you are getting at here Anyplace. It could mean judging others or self based upon some order of belief system which thereby places expectations based upon that system.

Or it can be somewhat synonymous with "common sense" or having good decision-making skills i.e. good judgment. So I'm not real clear where your judgment definition stands.
