Interesting. That's a torii, a gateway to a Shinto shrine.
(Actually, Nagasaki wasn't badly harmed by the Tohoku quake.)

Ahem. Our Department of Agriculture decided that a "program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry's position in the marketplace," should be funded by the growers themselves, and not the general public; industry groups volunteered to pay a 15-cent fee per real tree sold in order to pay for this ad campaign. Very different from a "tax," I think, but it's interesting to note how many people have been mislead by the uproar over this. Probably the same people who are buying cheap chinese slave-made fake trees anyway... The cheap import mongers are the ones who really got upset about this, and a lot of people fell for for their bullshit about it. WTF is up with that??? :?

They wanted the fee:
The Christmas tree industry has tried three different times to conduct promotional programs based on voluntary contributions. Each time, after about three years, the revenue declined to a point where the programs were ineffective. The decline in revenue is attributable to the voluntary nature of these programs. Therefore, the proponents have determined that they need a mechanism that would be sustainable over time. They believe that a national Christmas tree research and promotion program would accomplish this goal.

When you don't want to read someone's posts you put them on your "enemies" list (oh, how Nixonian of us), but when you're reading a thread and they posted it, you get a little message about how you have them on ignore.

I received this in my email a day or so ago. It was from my Seattle regional group and received a less than positive reception. I didn't have an issue with it. In fact I had to agree with it. Has anyone seen this article?

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods..... merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor.

This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, when nothing can be found that is produced by American hands.

Yes there is!
It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone--yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants all offering gift certificates, and, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks, this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town-Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

Got kids? How about a season pass to the children's museum or the community center pool? Include them in this tradition. Teach them a skill or sign them up for classes often offered at local craft shops. Include them in spending time holiday baking and in the making and giving of homemade gifts instead of hours spent shopping at malls.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, lotions and potions, pottery, clothing and beautiful wooden boxes.

Musicians need love, too, so find a venue showcasing local bands. Attend local festivals that support dozens of independent performers and artists at a time.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip, and how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of lights, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams, and, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.

THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

The more supporters behind this, the greater the effect. So forward on the word! Send to your mailing list, post it to discussion groups, throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city, send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is supposed to be about?

I have not given gifts or murdered a tree in the name of Christmas for over twenty years.. I refuse to be held hostage to the big money grab.....

I give to the poor all year round.. After the buying dumb asses are done.. I can pick up kids coats and such at a great knock off.. The little snot pickers need to feel warm and happy..

One of my roommates was caught fixing the washing machine, tonight, with a lighter and corn syrup. Before, he came up with this culinary masterpiece. Its hot dogs, sweet relish, jalepenos, a half a tub of butter and a spoon...ready to be microwaved.

We also found broken glass on the stove and a tub of flour in the ice machine.

I believe that the request for screen wipes has be accompanied by naming the substance that landed on the screen.
