I suspect that snarking is probably the result of people trying to give themselves an edge in order to look better among their peers because they feel they are unable to elevate themselves by positive means. I dislike snark.

Sometimes it's just good natured fun, trying to come up with something silly and outrageous. I can slough it off, or I can be very thin-skinned. I bounce around with it.
I try to keep to an "I'll apologize if I hurt someone's feelings" standard of behavior. Usually, I don't mean to hurt, so I try to be clear with that.

I think you are an excellent snarker fishy! I like some of the panache you add to your snark.

At first I took it personally and couldn't figure out why people would say things about my posts in a smartass (snarky) way. Sometimes it hurt my feelings. I, like you can be thin-skinned but for the most part snark doesnt bother me.

What I don't care for is the personal-attacks type, the very hurtful kind. I've never had that kind of snark directed towards me. But if someone decided to say mean things to me for the sake of being a heinous cretin, well ok. I'll just have a good laugh!

please don't be mean to me or I'll cry
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Fishy's snark is to etouffee as white is to rice.

I don't know what that means but now I want some etouffee even though she doesn't.

OED,,,, that sounds good enough to eat! I was baptised in snark by none other that SotP and his many socks not realizing they were all the same person. It offended me in the beginning and felt bad when unintentionally wandering off the reservation of some thread.

After I figured out WTF eplaya tradition and rules of thumb were, I realized it is like any other forum. There is humorous snark, disrespectful snark and cynical snark. Sometimes they seem to overlap to one degree or another. But overall, common sense prevails in one form or another.

There are certain statements so ridiculous that snark is begging for expression. Other statements seem to need snark when things are way too serious. And then there is snark which is completely uncalled for, offensive and downright elitist or based on untruth.

How I take snark now is dependent upon the context. Never personally,,,, some deserves absolute disregard. Some snark deserves a laugh and possibly embellishment. Some needs to be confronted based upon the incredulity of its premise.

I try not to be to snarky.
Sometimes, especially with certain posters here, it's really hard, and, I give in.

I know, I got my ass kicked early on. It took a while to figure it out, or, get calloused to it. SOP is a great guy..........I love him, and, he was a big part of my wanting to stick it out........(some may now curse him for that)due to trying to get past his hammerings.

Some here are just dicks about it, though.

There are a few "old timers" who sort of "initiate" folks, if it looks like they'll be staying around.
Some are not here anymore, and, we are that much the less for their absence.
But, Snark is part of the eplaya culture, IMHO.

I know at times, after a particularly pointed snark attack, I've sat here with a small tear rolling down my cheek.........but, that's just sensitive me.

But, now, fuckers, I'm a beast!!!

I think it would depend on the snarkee's post, and if the post implies an invitation to snark or not. If a person is arrogantly posting about trying to sneak into Burning Man without paying, they are opening themselves up to snarky comments and should feel free to have fun engaging with the snarky banter. If a person is saying they are worried about the status of their low income ticket application because they really couldn't afford to send out the money in the first place, a snide reply to that would be middle school stupid and show deficiency of character. So, I guess I'm softening a bit on my dislike of snark in some instances. So why don't you guys get your butts out of your ass's and give some useful advice for once?

so far i've managed to avoid snark directed at me, and depending on my hormone levels have thick/thin skin. DON'T MESS WITH A 50 YEAR OLD WOMAN HAVING A HOT FLASH. I'm just sayin. Bad things happen.

I've been on other boards that were just downright hostile and had stopped joining communities like this. human nature is nasty when anonymous. I lurked here for a good long time and with one or two exceptions, most snark on eplaya is incredibly funny. so i joined up. there are a couple people i have plonked due to general nastiness, but i thing "they" are actually "one". Simon is not one of them, he is wonderful in all his incarnations.

i do admit those introduction posts from dj's and/or their agents and then the ones from people begging tickets are downright hilarious. i look forward to seeing iso's picture on those.

I've seen far worse snark on other boards, chat channels, etc, so the general level of snark here doesn't really bother me, though I do appreciate the "be helpful on the first page, snark away on the second" standard with all but the most odious of posters. (As with the idiot who made an unsolicited offer to the entire internet about transporting contraband into the Burn. Delightful thread).

I don't dish out much snark, which is probably why I don't receive much.

I'm okay with snark if it's humorous, beyond that I wish snark and insults didn't exist on eplaya.

Funny, but it's amazing how many eplayans one may actually meet in person at the burn, hence, this board is NOT annonomous entitely. We are all real people with real feelings. Hopefully grudges don't carry on to the actual playa or develope here on eplaya in the first place.

yes...in all seriousness, i want to make it clear that it IS all in good fun as it should be...On the actual playa, the banter can be even "Livelier" and i relish the wit and wisdom that gets mixed in with the occasional "fuck your day."

i am not really a meanie, i just play one on tv.

and i am trying to tone down my vitriol to an acceptable Ph factor, as to be useful on salads.

every day, and every way, i'm getting better and better.

ok...now have a beautiful Love filled evening my wonderful electronic menagerie, i'm going to a poetry reading....I shit you not....

i was promised punch and pie.

I don't know. In the extreme, it's not a style of fun I enjoy, especially when it goes to the more scatologically insulting side of the dial. I enjoy the silly, the sarcastic, the clever. I cringe when a new d.j. comes in and asks to spin... oh no, and the art of the snark is often truly beautiful, but I can never handle the big fish (not a reference to theC. referring to the video) and so I try to keep a low profile and use a lot of IMHO camouflage. wimpy, yellow, non confrontational, may - beee. Becoming inured to meanness is something that concerns me generally. I'm bothered by bullies.

I refuse to be the referee past "be helpful first". I tried taking down some truly heinous posts, but that only made it worse. You stand by your words and let the community inform you if you're a total dick.

I've been snarked, before I was a mod. Off my meds was what I recall. I did not like it much. Wasn't even snark, pretty much pure insult. My first and only plonk. Not half as romantic as it sounds.

Snark grows much like moss or lichen, slowly, until it engulfs your exterior and begins breaking down your rock-hard shell, eventually invading your secret gooey parts. Like your brain. Well, maybe not like lichen.

I might have misunderstood but it sounds like your telling everyone that snark-moss has eaten your brain…. If this is so it explains a lot,… like this proclivity you have for going to a windy dusty week long even held in a desert in August. Up to now I’d thought it was because any place is better than Utah in August.

I have to say that the snark here is fantastic and it saves my sanity on a regular basis. Never in bad taste (well, not by my standards), rarely ill-natured, and sharp enough to take the edge off the sugar I coat my words in at work. Thank you for letting it rip, really. I often find that my words & thoughts are too far apart.

For example:

"Thank you for calling back, sir." [I paged you three times in the past thirty minutes, WTF is wrong with you?]

"I'm sorry to interrupt your evening, sir." [You knew you were on call tonight; quit whining.]

"Dr. X called from St Y's ER about a 23 year old male with a nail in his eyeball." [Step away from the party now, I need your full attention!]

"Yes, sir, I understand that you are a retinal specialist and this is not strictly a retinal problem, but you are the physician on-call for the ophthalmology service." [You are Board Certified, a member of our eye faculty, and you are IT tonight.]

"I'm sorry, I don't know what other hospitals he may have called. We have immediate air transport available. Please hold while I put you through to Dr. X." [Goddamn it he called US, we must RESPOND, so MAN THE FUCK UP and talk to this guy! He's in East Nowhere with a patient he can't touch! Get a fucking grip and green-light this admission!]

Yeah. Well. I appreciate free speech. 8) Keep snarking!

Edited to add: I have read back to 2004 on this board, and have seen eplaya as a community correct the heinously rude. :P Y'all are great. There are not many boards that are true living communities. 8)

True story...The one and only time I got mad about being snarked, I posted back and found out about a totally unrelated, random, mini practical joke played on me at burning man by an annonomous eplayan, i figured it out months after the burn!
It was a harmless practical joke (not the regifter mousetrap) it was one on one interaction...the practical joke resulted in another indescribably good fucking time, fyi thanks joker (you know who you are, LOL) we're all good!
Hmm, were there other practical jokes played on me? hahaha, that's part of the FUN at burning man!

Snark is good in moderation. I'd like to think that last years Burn was a reflection of the limited snark. It was the friendliest year yet...for me.

I agree with Iso. What's a snark?
I don't post things because I believe that they are the absolute truth. I post them because I believe that they should be considered.
