Song Lyrics

Post by Ranger Genius » Sat Mar 19, 2011 1:03 pm

Sometimes the lyrics from a song you like (or don't like) will strike a chord with you and you just want to share them. Normally, you find some flimsy pretext to work them into an Eplaya thread or post them, apropos of nothing, as your Facebook status.

Well, stop that. Post them here instead.

Thread etiquette guide:

Please no more than ten lines (don't copy/paste the whole damn song).
Please don't embed YouTube videos. Links are welcome.
Please mention the song and artist (if available) in the post.
“We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.”

Ahem, Dick
Please don't embed YouTube videos. Links are welcome.
The Billiard Shark whom anyone catches
His Doom's extremely hard
He's made to dwell in a prison cell,
A spot that's always barred
And there he plays extravagant matches
With fit less finger falls
On a cloth untrue,
With a twisted cue
And elliptical billiard balls

One verse of My Object All Sublime, from The Mikado, by W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan, title character singing. No professional video that I've see of any of their work on YouTube, which is too bad, because back in the 70s there was a certain amount of the D'olye Carte (sp?) troop broadcast on pbs. No wonder the republicans what to kill them off, what?

I could edit the below, but instead of me picking and choosing, why don't YOU read the part you like.

Listen up boys and girls the words below are still true today

When I was young
Eric Burdon & The Animals

The rooms were so much colder then.
My father was a soldier then.
And times were very hard.
When I was young.

When I was young.
I smoked my first cigarette at ten.
And for girls, I had a great yen.
When I was young.

When I was young it was more important.
Pain more painful, the laughter much louder, yeah.
When I was young.

When I was young.
I met my first love at thirteen.
She was brown, and I was pretty green.
And I learned quite a lot.
When I was young.
When I was young.

When I was young it was more important.
Pain more painful, laughter much louder, yeah.
When I was young.

When I was young.
My faith was so much stronger then.
I believed in fellow men.
And I was so much older then.
When I was young.
When I was young.
When I was young.
When I was young.
When I was young

end

Perhaps the above is one reason why I hang around here, at my advanced age!

Flogging Molly

"If I Ever Leave This World Alive"

If I ever leave this world alive
I'll thank for all the things you did in my life
If I ever leave this world alive
I'll come back down and sit beside your
feet tonight
Wherever I am you'll always be
More than just a memory
If I ever leave this world alive

This is just a short paragraph, but this song has a lot of meaning to me. It makes me cry when I here it. I wanted to put in all the lyrics, but I'm biding by the thread rules.
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Light the candle
Put the lock upon the door
You have sent the maid home early
Like a thousand times before
Like the castle in its corner
In a medieval game
I foresee terrible trouble
And I stay here just the same

Any major dude with half a heart surely will tell you my friend
Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again
When the demon is at your door
In the morning it won't be there no more
Any major dude will tell you

Jan lays down and wrestles in her sleep
Moonlight spills on comic books
And superstars in magazines
An old friend calls and tells us where to meet
Her plane takes off from Baltimore
And touches down on Bourbon street

We sit outside and argue all night long
About a god we've never seen
But never fails to side with me
Sunday comes and all the papers say
Ma Teresa's joined the mob
And happy with her full time job

Am I alive or thoughts that drift away?
Does summer come for everyone?
Can humans do what prophets say?
If I die before I learn to speak
Can money pay for all the days I lived awake
But half asleep?

A life is time, they teach you growing up
The seconds ticking killed us all
A million years before the fall
You ride the waves and don't ask where they go
You swim like lions through the crest
And bathe yourself in zebra flesh

I've been downhearted baby
Ever since the day we met
Once I noticed I was on fire, I decided to relax and enjoy the fall™

It happened a long time ago baby.

In the new magic land

See, the Indians and the buffalo

They existed hand in hand

The Indians, they needed some food

And some skins for a roof

They only took what they needed, baby

Millions of buffalo were the proof

But then came the white dogs

With their thick and empty heads

They couldn't see past the billfold

They wanted all the buffalo dead

Everything was SSO sad

When I looked above the canyon walls,

Some strong eyes did I see

I think it's somebody comin around
to save my ass baby

I think he's comin around

To save you and me

Boyyss......

I said above the canyon wall

Strong eyes did glow

It was the leader of the land baby

OH MY GOD!!

THE GREAT WHITE BUFFALO

LOOK OUT!!! LOOK OUT!!!

Well he got the battered herd

He led em cross the land

With the GREAT WHITE BUFFALO

They gonna make a final stand

The GREAT WHITE BUFFALO

Look out here he comes

He's doin all right

Makin everything all right
My cats are cuter than your grandkids!

A-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow

The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde and sing and cry, Valhalla, I am coming

On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore

Ah-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs FLOW
How soft your fields, so green
can whisper tales of gore, of how we calmed the tides of war
We are your overlords

I don't understnd the point of only ten lines.
Just sounds annoying.

Here's the only one I can think of worth parsing.

Sorry fishy, I couldn't accept his "thread ettiqute" guidelines, it defeats the songs by limiting/reducing them to only so many lines, as an example that ditty I posted can't be reduced at all.
And I wanna hear some of these others, but....

I have these moments
All steady and strong
I’m feeling so holy and humble
The next thing I know
I’m all worried and weak
And I feel myself
Starting to crumble.

The meanings get lost
And the teachings get tossed
And you don’t know what you’re
Going to do next.
You wait for the sun
But it never quite comes
Some kind of message comes
Through to you.
Some kind of message comes through.

And it says to you...

Chorus
Love when you can
Cry when you have to...
Be who you must
That’s a part of the plan
Await your arrival
With simple survival
And one day we’ll all understand...

I had a woman
Who gave me her soul
But I wasn’t ready to
Take it.
Her heart was so fragile
And heavy to hold
And I was afraid I might
Break it.

Your conscience awakes
And you see your mistakes
And you wish someone
Would buy your confessions.
The days miss their mark
And the night gets so dark
And some kind of message
Comes through to you
Some kind of message
Shoots through --

Chorus

There is no eden or
Heavenly gates
That you’re gonna make it to
One day
But all of the answers you seek
Can be found
In the dreams that you dream
On the way.

This is an example of one I can't edit effectively, esp considering the lyrics aren't available anywhere.

We already have My Favorite Song on YouTube (Today) and there are complete songs posted all over the net. However, there is something about reducing something to the essence--tao or haiku or aphorism--that seems to me valuable. It's easy to cut and paste--editing takes you belong the lazy knee jerk, "like button" of pop culture into reframing it, setting it as a small jewel.
I don't know if that's what Genius meant, but that's what I got from it.

Hey you, close your riven rose
You're a poet, priest of nowhere
And your polished, seemed attitude brings you more

Yeah you, you're a reckless angel
You're a heartbreaking soldier
And your splendid insanities brings you more

So come into my mind and breathe into the morning light
Come into my mouth and breed
So we shake, shake, shake, shake into the sun like an arrow
And we burn, burn, burn, burn into the world once again
You're a sweet-raped hole, such a desolate soul, wearing a crown of M80's
And your livid insanity brings you more
You awaken from the fairyland dream
Your eyes have focused on the fan on the ceiling
You realise your a part of the machine
Uptight in Terminal City
Fucked up in Terminal City

My Socrates - Tri-State Killing Spree

Post by NotANugget » Sun Mar 20, 2011 11:13 pm

So I watch the clock tick in the corner of the room
Hungry little black books feeding Sunday schools
And I'm drenched in the fire of a thousand ages
Whoring glories for the pouring man
And I laugh and I laugh as I throw it away
My heart fills empty again and again
And I glisten in the forest of a thousand black roses
Feeling holy and feeling small
And I bleed like Jesus and bleed for you
Like spilling Socrates, imitation to feel
If I were God, I'd watch you fall down
You awaken from the fairyland dream
Your eyes have focused on the fan on the ceiling
You realise your a part of the machine
Uptight in Terminal City
Fucked up in Terminal City

It really was just a point being made, with anarchist intent... finding that video(with lyrics imbedded WITHIN the video) wasn't all that easy, and I never said it was my favorite song of thiers, but I do know the whole thing by heart and really it can't be taken down to 10 line collection, or "essense" and there are many more like that that I would find just as difficult to dissect.
And damn I hate pretentiuos rules regardless.
Why can't it be 12 lines, or 14 or even gosh..20?

Yup, couldn't agree more.

And that Megadeth song read as "lyrics" is nothing more than an angry siuicide note.(interesting backstory about that song also)
But the music makes it much much more.
