I am looking to build a network system that will run off of a Lap Top, with as large a storage, as it can manage. Everyone has iPhones, so it will not be complex to set up an internal Internet using the laptop, running 24 hours, as the server.
What all is involved in setting up something like this? If I use it outside of Burningman what is the best alternatives to providing the net? i.e. through a MiFi device, or a simcard WiFi modem. The server will have confidential of Medical, Macanical and Database info that will be access with the iPhones, or iPad, or by laptops in the camp. I would like to setup a server based electronic communication BBS, with a GUI similar to this ( http://thehabitat.proboards.com/index.cgi ), for inhouse basic communications, it will have a node to allow Video Chat from iPhone to iPhone, and too laptop, via the wifi.
Here is a prelimnary list of shit I think I will need:
Hardware:
1. Macbook Pro Laptop with 10 terabytes for Server.
2. Simcard and Simcard Modem with WiFi capabilities
3. 5 iPhones 2 iPads 4 Laptops
4.
Software
1. Apache Server Software Mac
2. BBS GUI (serverside)
3. Video Chat/Text Chat Software (serverside)
4. iPhone/Macbook Walkie-Talkie Software (serverside)
5.
Any ideas?

In case of an Emergency it would be nice to have nodes setup that can be accessed if the Internet ever goes down, or gets severely restricted, or ...
We should have computers running at different peoples homes and work places (where allowable) like in the old days, where you had to call up too a BBS directly with your modem. Something like that but since the phones will likely be down, maybe satellite modems? or HAM band modems? We could have survival info and medical databases, etc. available even if the net is down, on a peer to peer type network...

Just for clarification, are you attempting to set this up for in-camp use or for half the city? What exactly is the point of the large server space?
Anyway..
Personally I would just use a old WAP, with captive portal to force all HTTP requests to the server. But that only takes care of the website. .. humm .. You would think that keeping the port range facetime uses open would allow the devices to talk to each other. But you know it's never that easy.
