It's all numbers. The person or group who made the decision to close this plant and town, probably has never been to Empire or met any of the people who were displaced. I'm sure it was the right move due to the economy, but it really is sad that so many people lost their homes and had to uproot and find jobs elsewhere.

Are they gonna make it the next 60 days till enough people get there to really make a differance. Is anyone opening a store in Gerlach? It sounds like the market will be wide open and without competion. From a pratical stand point it would make sense not to have to drive to Empire, or ride the bus, with the additional use of fuels, etc. Are there any store fronts available, where the Empire store folks could move their equipment to in Gerlach and continue on in business.oneeyeddick wrote:They don't have a choice, USG only agreed to let them use it till after this year's event.

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

There are about two or three empty bars, but I think that's it for available commercial real estate. I hope the store can make back it's investment, especially after that nasty scene a year ago...maryanimal wrote:That's a good idea!! This is horrible. I feel bad for all the people who lost their jobs and homes. I really hope the owners of the store find a place to reopen. I really love that store. Its been like a tradition to spend time there on the way in and out of the playa.

Re: Empire in the news
"The store has been here over 60 years and done well. The store is open and will remain open. The only concerns we have is power and water is supplied from the plant if they shut that off we will have some serious hurdles to overcome."
"Like I said before I don't depend on the store to live if I did then that would become a life altering situation for us. I am still able to employ people, feed people, and keep the lights on. I will continue to hold on to the hope that I can continue to do that!"
Happy to hear that.
