Sold out - what does that mean in numbers?

Post by geospyder » Mon Jul 25, 2011 7:44 am

Anyone know what sold out means in actual numbers? How many tickets were actually up for sale?

The magic number is 50,000+-. In 2008, the size of the city was made bigger to accomodate the larger population. It was shrunk back down the next year, so I figure that real estate is going to be tight this year. There is still 7 square miles of playa to roam around. By contrast, Brooklyn NY has 50,000 people living on top of each other in a square block! :D

Always good to view things in perspective.

I've been wondering the same thing. I actually added up tickets per tier and scholarship/low income a few months ago when the lower ones sold so quick. I remember last year was 51K and change so I've been assuming close to 60k. It's gonna be crazy. :D

Of course this is also the year I am arriving and leaving close to the busy times... with a bus. That will be fun.

52k is the magic number as per Mirian:

“Our BLM permit is the restriction. We are between 5-year permits and this year we need to stay with the max-population to be within 2% of last year’s max-population. We grow every year more than that, so we couldn’t allow the natural growth for 2011, we’ve had to shut things off to stay within the BLM’s comfort zone. Capacity is a relative term in the desert. We need to stay near the max pop of 52,000.” – Marian Goodell (7/25/2011)

@cryptofishist - Love that cover! I grew up with a big print of that on the wall of our kitchen (instilling a permanent snark for midwestern folk, which i blame on my father)

Did your father invent the midwest or something? (sly wink)

It just means that every aging hipster that wasn't planning on going now simply *must* go this year in order to say they were there the year it was "sold out".

It's going to be a very weird year and selling out, in my opinion, will probably do more harm than good to the event because the simple fact that it is "sold out" will draw people that probably shouldn't be there in the first place.

It presents a certain challenge to some certain people.

Working perimeter might be challenging this year.

Do we need a "What, Where, When" for the Friday Frat turn back at gate?

I think I would go out to watch that.
