Burner Travel Log 2011

Post by burner von braun » Sun Aug 21, 2011 4:13 pm

Hey all,

This thread is a little bit experimental in it's nature, so please bear with me...

Seeing as we can now edit our posts indefinitely, in this thread you only need to post one time and that secures your permanent location here for the duration of this thread's lifespan. Post once then simply go back to that original post, and edit it to add more (or delete prior stuff)

The idea is for our favorite eplayans (that is you) to each have their own brief travel log in order to share your last minute prep, thoughts and grand adventure out to the Playa this year

Let us know what you did today on the way out to the burn!

08/23/11 Today I slept in till 9am. I went to my storage spot and found my table I'm bringing and a few other necessaties, Went to Goodwill and Value Village and picked up some baking pans that fit into my camp oven. I then went home to take a nap. That didn't happen because my cat wouldn't leave me alone!

Started packing my car and I'm proud I did a good job! Then later on this evening I went out to dinner.
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Thursday 8/25
Left the house 4:45 Am, clear sailing, made it onto, through and off of Manhattan by 6AM. Gassed up in NJ ($3.69 diesel - I've been paying $4.19, at best, in NY), held my breath until I hit PA. Long periods of blinding downpours cleared by the time I hit Ohio. Gassed up in Indiana ($3.89), averaged 41.6 MPG, I love my TDI . Made it to Chicago by 5:45 local, 855 miles in 14 hours, longest leg of the trip. 1900 in front of me. Next stop North Platte, Ne.

All the construction in PA/OH convinces me I'm returning on any road but 80.

All the way I'm running mental inventory, nope, don't think I forgot anything.

I read ePlaya. Fuck! I forgot a pillow..... Get ready for bed, Fuck! No Pajama bottoms, not that I normally wear them but I do on playa. Looks like I'll be doing some shopping other than for food.

Friday 8/26
My left brake light bulb blows on the way to North Platte. I try staying close to the speed limit so I don't get pulled over and inadvertantly end up giving a glaring one sided wink to a trooper. Also kept my distance so I wouldn't have to break for sporadic traffic flow. I make it to North Platte without incident and look in the manual. VW doesn't list any of the bulb sizes AND states all bulb changes should be done by a dealer. Do they mean the dealer that tried to charge me 76 fucking dollars for an oil change that was covered? WTF, how many mechanics does it take to screw in a light bulb? Bulbs are considered consumables and not covered under warranty, wonder what they charge for that. Easy enough I go to an auto store, look it up in the book and get the right bulb. It takes awhile to move a lot of stuff in my overpacked vehicle (but nowhere near as frustrating as last year when I had to load/unload the vehicle 7, count 'em 7 times, to get to the wheel that lives under the cargo bay when I blew a tire) and I change the bulb. That said, does every car nowadays tell you on the instrument panel that you should check your left brake light? That was so cool, I'd much rather have a computer tell me than a trooper.

735 miles in c.12 hours. 1600 down 1175 to go. 655 to SLC tomorrow and then 520 to Reno on Sunday.

I have the address for a SLC Walmart and an In N Out in my GPS. I don't eat fast food normally but I'm also not stupid, that shit is crack (and nowhere near shit with benefits).

Sat - made it to SLC without issue, took a picture in Wy where I blew the tire last year to put with the mementos. Lots of burners along the way, we're so clandestine (not!), saw a couple in the hotel parking lot grabbing their bags from the back of a 16 foot budget truck, I peeked in as I drove by definitely burners, totes, rugs, conduit, tarps, I waved, they took one look at the back of y wagon and waved back.

Along the way I was scribbling items on a scrap of paper to pick up at Walmart, don't ask me how but I spent $84, expensive pillow and jammies. I'm baffled about one item on the list, I wrote W.W. I'm sure at the time I thought I would later know exactly what it was. I stood there for a good ten minutes and eventually just gave up. I don't need white wash, whole wheat, or wet wipes. I thought I had packed an empty fabric softner bottle for an emergency leak, I dumped it at the hotel. I was shocked, and then pleasantly surprised, when the toilet started to bubble.... detergent.

I'm looking to hit Reno mid-afternoon to do the water/beer/booze/food thing, pick up a bike and then check in. I'll probably head out early Monday morning but I'm playing it by ear.

Floater or sinker , eh? Ha ha.... hey until you try something you never know. Sorry you won't be with us this year. I'd tip a beer on the playa for you but I'd probably get scowls and severely chastised by an irate gang of Earth Guardians or something, I'll do it over what I'm passing off as an "evap pond" (hey it worked last year)

Sun - Windshield WIper fluid!!!!! Duh! I'm in Reno about to head out to get the sustainables. As an aside the reason the suds in the whirling toilet were so entertaining is that many moons ago my sister owned a restaurant/bar on the Upper East Side. One early morning I was put up to a dare, went to a 24hr market and bought laundry detergent. The bar was directly across from a high rise luxury building that featured a long circular driveway (long by NYC standards) that sloped up to the door and then back down to the street centered by an enormous fountain. Let's just say all the regulars had a ball watching the suds roll down both ends of the driveway and into the street, more so the befuddled look on the doorman's face.

Welcome sic pup, we've got your space all set for you! Let us know how the second leg of your trip goes. Sorry about I-80. Enjoy the cross-country run! I have AAA, let me know if you want me to check your route for delays..
Thanks, I like the concept of this thread, the only problem with it is that if folk don't continually add new posts to the thread it will sink and only be viewed by the few that remember to seek it out (and yes, this is a very thinly veiled bump).
