All Troops Out of Iraq by End of Year

All troops will be pulled out of Iraq by the end of this year (2011). Troops will all be home in time for the Holidays. Good news indeed. Now if we can get them all out of Afghanistan too...

Actually, you're right. We won't get bogged down there. Nor anywhere else for that matter...for the reason you stated first...no money. You'll find that our foot-print around the entire world will be getting a lot smaller. It's tough being on a budget.

Historically, our national debt has always tracked very closely to wars. Killing people is expensive!

Of course, we never belonged in Iraq, and our original target in Afghanistan was Al Qaeda, not the Taliban. Nobody will ever defeat a native force in Afghanistan, or teach them democracy; the best we could ever hope for is driving out another group of foreigners.

and, good timing, with low poll numbers and an election right around the corner....and really, though he did say he'd get us out of those places "right away".........he didn't say what "right away" meant.

US Contractors make up 54% of the forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

$3 Billion a year for contractors and contruction to be invested.

This is far from over.

There were supposed to be about 3,000 troops that stayed past the end of the year for training purposes. However, the Iraqi government couldn't reach an agreement on giving them immunity. If this is the case for the military, how many private companies are going to want to stay there at their own risk and peril? My thinking is that most of those companies will be gone with the troops. (though I certainly could be wrong about this--the companies staying part, I'm certain about the immunity issue.)

The State Department is working that issue. Contractors have never had immunity.

At present two contractor companies are already signed up - one for embassy support, another for training the Police force. Plans extend well past 2011. Friend of mine in Iraq just extended his contract for three more years - convoy support and security.

Levels will be far lower, however, they are going to be contracted and controlled by the State Department.

At an average of $130k a year, you'd be amazed at what people would do.

Or maybe not.
