Apple iOS5
Anybody using Apple OS5? Ever since the upgrade my iPad has not been the same, it crashes now like an old PC! Lots of others on the Apple forums are complaining about this too. Looks like Apple has finally entered the harsh reality of real computing provided to the masses.
And not supporting Flash is a royal pain, but that has nothing to do with OS5.

iOS 5 you mean?
I'm not touching it until there's an untethered jailbreak for it

I have an iPhone 3Gs, and the latest firmware update has made my phone slower, it now takes about 15 minutes to sync the darn thing. It seems to take more than twice as long for apps to open now. (Email took over 1 minute just to open, my computer is still slower, but just barely)
Thanks for messing up my phone Apple.

This is the only Apple device I have, and the longer I own it the less I like it.
The jailbreak will be out soon...then you can use it with a mouse!
I was tempted to get the new iPhone, but decided to go with the new Droid Razr--wonderful choice. I'm waiting for the computer doc and I think I'll be able to retire my iPad. It took just about a year and their latest upgrade for the enchantment to wear off.

Yup, those are words rarely uttered by Apple users, from what I hear. And this is still residual from Steve Jobs. Just wait.stretch80 wrote:I have an iPhone 3Gs, and the latest firmware update has made my phone slower, it now takes about 15 minutes to sync the darn thing. That is the only apple product that I own. When my contract allows it (thanks Rogers for the Draconian terms), I plan on getting an Android based phone.jkisha wrote:Yup, those are words rarely uttered by Apple users, from what I hear.stretch80 wrote: Thanks for messing up my phone Apple.
This is the second iPhone that has been messed up by an "fix". Oh, and having to reload all my music, contacts, calendar items was a bit inconvenient too.

Re: Apple iOS5
I've been using iOS 5 on phone and iPad since launch, without any trouble. I did notice that it seemed to burn through the battery faster than 4.x, but that had more to do with apps sending more notifications and using location services more (basically, developers wanting to put in as many bells and whistles as they could, without thinking about the impact it would have on the end user). I went into my settings and changed my preferences on what was sending me notifications or turning on the GPS, and everything's been great in the battery department, and then when 5.0.1 came out it got slightly better.
This may sound silly, but have you tried restarting your device? Actually powering it down - hold the button at the top right for a few seconds, then use the 'slide to power off' control on the screen when it appears. Once it's shut completely down, give it a second or two and power it back up.
Flash has been less of an issue than I thought it would. Don't get me wrong, I've thought it was a dead platform for years, and have been fully behind telling Adobe to FUCK OFF until it could deliver a less crashy, less battery-draining, and more secure player for computers and devices. Fortunately, web developers/content providers have read the writing on the wall and just about all the sites I visit on the iPad don't have any issues. For what it's worth, though, even Adobe's abandoned mobile Flash.

Re: Apple iOS5
On the upside, once you switch to Android you won't be troubled by upgrade issues, since most of the devices can't actually even run the latest version of the OS.

Re: Apple iOS5
The 3GS processors and memory system just aren't setup for the newest iOS. It's like trying to run a new program on a 10 year old computer.
My only beef honestly with Apple products is how tight they have a control on the app store and the whole TOS that comes with it. They're such proprietary, capitalistic bastards that it just astounds me. Smart in the money side of things, but dammit.. ugh.
For example: I'm designing now some pretty high tech stuff with the LEDs that involves remote control via iPhone/smartphone. We first tried to go the Bluetooth route, until we learned that Apple has a total lockdown on anything that the iPhone talks to via Bluetooth. They require you to incorporate their own proprietary "authentication coprocessor" onboard any piece of final hardware. In other words, a little chip that gives your hardware permission to even talk to the iPhone. That's it. You have to apply to even be in the program to get on the list of being ABLE to buy these coprocessors to use in your design.. and even that is a who you know political game. It's crazy.
So now, we're going the TCP/IP route and developing an app for it. Now comes further roadblocks involving the phone acting as a DHCP server and what not being as that they start paralleling that to tethering and god forbid you find a way to circumvent anything. Think back to the Adobe Flash wars with Steve Jobs.
Ugh.
FWIW, it looks like the untethered jailbreak for 5.0 is out.. and that's why they quick went to 5.01 which now patched the hole. Back to the waiting game again..

Re: Apple iOS5
Actually, junglesmacks, the 5.0.1 release went out when it did for other reasons. Concerns about a security exploit, but also some issues that 4s users were having with battery life. A 5.0.2 release is also coming quickly, but has nothing to do with the jailbreak crowd.

Re: Apple iOS5
On my iPad, Safari just sucks since the upgrade. Crashes several times a day and rendering of certain websites is terrible. Even eplaya has been effected. Now, whenever I post, if the post doesn't go through on the first submit, I can't access (scroll to) the submit button again unless I turn the device to verticle.
And I'm experiencing the same crashes with apps too, like Flibboard. It's never crashed once before the upgrade, now at least once a day. I could go on...
And yes, I shut the device off once every week and let the battery run down until the device powers itself off once a month.

Eh.. I'll give it a 90/10 ratio on why it went out. A little too coincidental that the two happened within days of each other..

It's funny. I'm a Mac user for my computer, but for my phone and the tablet I will undoubtedly buy it will be Android all the way.

Re: Apple iOS5
I have it on my 3gs and it's mostly ok, but definitely runs slower than before. My g/f had an iphone 3 that was pretty much unusable after she updated it to iOS4, so at least they didn't totally ruin the phone. I'm kinda on the fence as to what to get next. Not terribly impressed with the iphone4s, but there's some good reasons to stick with apple if you have other devices from them. SG2 or Galaxy Nexus are tempting...
