Re: KONY 2012
For those doubting the travel expenses, in those areas under the current conditions travel can be very expensive. It's expensive even to camp out if you need Land Rovers, drivers, translators, medivac insurance and security. Documentarians and journalists there are not living the 5 star life, and they are taking a lot of risks.
The point is to get this on the agenda of governments around the world and the African Union to take the risk to bring this guy and others like him to justice. A charity cannot in itself field armies and commandos to do it, but can pressure governments, the UN and the AU to do so.

well, heck why not?
lets make a charity "army for peace" and, march, and show them that believing our way, is the best......and kill them if they don't agree with us, or convert to our way.......
no wait, that's right, someone else already did that. never mind.

Re: KONY 2012
I think this dude suffers from something that a lot of upper middle class white activists suffer from, which is the idea that they're going to go to Africa and solve Africa's problems even though they don't know from what the fuck, while completely ignoring the problems that are occurring in their own home countries, which, I would argue, are problems they'd actually have a chance at having a measurable positive impact on.
But this group is doing two things right, one is validating the theory, just doing what other social change groups have done, that it's possible to use the connected world as a platform for change, and the other is a negative example about how to allocate funds in a non-profit in ways that don't piss people off.

Is he really harnessing the power of the internet for change, or is he showing the "nigerians" new ways of finding suckers?

My son showed me this: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12429
Handy. I'm definitely bookmarking this one.
I'm not much of a forwarder, or poster of causes. I usually am the jerk that replies ALL with the snopes article on whatever crap someone just emailed to me. My aunt has FINALLY removed me from her mass forwards because of this.
So, I like to poke around and research stuff.
Personal experience with obnoxious reposting doing good: After being pounded on the head with PINK ribbons on facebook, pink socks on football players etc a friend of mine FINALLY had a mammogram done. You guessed it, but they caught it in time for just a lumpectomy and radiation did the trick.
Other friends of mine had a missing teenager, they started a round of Help us find ... and someone who saw the picture on facebook recognized her and called the hotline. True, it's been six months and it's still out there getting posted around, but hopefully that will stop one day.

Re: KONY 2012
Okay okay now what's that guy's name again?
Seriously suffering from information sickness here, I mean I applaud the effort to get the word out and focus attention on this guy so he can't hide, but.
My metro stations are already plastered with ads for some KOGOD school of business and a documentary about the KHOJALY massacre in Azerbaijan, so...
I can't keep them straight.
More coffee might help, but...
...nooooooooooooo, not my KONA...

Uhhh... drugs are bad, mmmmkay?
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/03/ ... 4120120317
Jason Russell, the filmmaker behind the viral video "Kony 2012," is receiving medical treatment after police detained him in connection with public intoxication and indecent exposure, police said.
Police detained Russell, 33, near San Diego's Mission Bay Park about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, when concerned citizens reported a half-naked man running through traffic and screaming, KNSD-TV reports.
Officers found Russell "in his underwear" and allegedly masturbating in public, a police spokeswoman said. Russell also allegedly vandalized some cars and was likely under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
"Kony 2012" filmmaker Jason Russell was "no problem for the police," the spokeswoman told reporters. "However, during the evaluation we learned that we probably needed to take care of him."
Police detained Russell and took him to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment.
Russell is co-founder of Invisible Children Inc., a San Diego nonprofit that bankrolled the "Kony 2012" video to raise awareness about African warlord Joseph Kony and his alleged atrocities.
Russell's "Kony 2012" video gained worldwide exposure in recent weeks, becoming the most-watched viral video of all time, according to the website Gizmodo. You can watch the video here:
Invisible Children's CEO issued a statement, saying Jason Russell was "suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition."
"The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday," the CEO's statement said, according to KNSD.
In public intoxication cases, police can generally detain an intoxicated person until the person sobers up. If Russell was voluntarily intoxicated, that's not a defense to a crime.
But since police took Jason Russell to a medical facility for treatment, that could suggest a more serious mental condition. If a person's mental state makes him unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of his acts, that could set him up for a possible mental-illness defense.
Prosecutors will likely wait for the results of Jason Russell's medical evaluation before considering whether to press charges. Russell, an evangelical Christian, is married with two children -- one of whom has a cameo role in "Kony 2012."

LOL what crap.
how many bazillions of times have we heard of 'celebrities' and public figures doing stupid shit, or cancelling shit, or coming under scrutiny for their drug/alcohol related stuff and the spokesperson says it was "EXHAUSTION"
Demi Moore has decided to seek "professional assistance" after her health scare two nights ago.
Moore was hospitalized and treated for exhaustion after paramedics received a 911 call from her Los Angeles home late Monday evening. Media reports are speculating that Moore's seizure-like episode and other health complications may be due to her recent dramatic weight loss or substance abuse.
Demi Moore and Tracy Morgan are not alone in the list of celebrities that have fell victim to exhaustion .....pop-star Lady Gaga ..unexpectedly had to cancel several shows [because] she had an irregular heart-rate due to dehydration and exhaustion.
Rihanna canceled a few tour dates in Sweden ...after checking into a hospital for "severe exhaustion." Disney star Selena Gomez was also treated for a similiar diagnosis in Summer 2011, forcing her to call off several performances. Just a week after withdrawing his bid for the Haitian presidency in September 2010, rapper Wyclef Jean was admitted into a hospital for exhaustion. Lindsay Lohan has reportedly left movie sets several times in the past years to seek medical attention after complaining of fatigue as well.
etc..
etc..

Are you saying that "dehydration" doesn't cause running through traffic in a Speedo and masturbating at 11:30am on a Thursday?

I thought that was endemic to Evangelical Christian communities.

Re: KONY 2012
Is it just me, or am I the only one who smells a rat . When have the western powers ever demonized someone and then the next day, we find the country being invaded ? Do ex friends of the CIA, Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi ring a bell and I’m sure it is no coincidence that Uganda is just starting to allow the western oil companies to begin oil production
I am generous minded and am prepared to believe the people behind “Invisible Children” are genuine but to anyone with a brain, the agenda is obvious . America and probably Britain as well, need an excuse to invade Uganda to control the mineral assets, specifically oil . Joseph Kony will be the new ‘devil’ (like Saddam and Gaddafi) and western troops will have to invade to remove Kony from Uganda . At the same time, they will take control of the mineral assets and place their puppets in control of Uganda .
The main politician in the video who advocates the removal of Kony is Republican Senator Jim Inhofe and guess who have been his major source of funds for the 2008 and 2010 re-election campaign .
From his Wikipedia page :
Fundraising
In the 2008 election cycle, Inhofe’s largest campaign donors represented the oil and gas ($446,900 in donations), leadership PACs ($316,720) and electric utilities ($221,654) industries/categories . In 2010, his largest donors represented the oil and gas ($429,950) and electric utilities ($206,654).
The video is an attempt to manipulate public opinion into ‘something must be done’ with the ‘won’t anybody think of the children’ emphasis and that ‘something must be done’ will probably involve sending troops into Uganda . But why all of a sudden is America concerned with the children of Africa ? It never has before .
Kony is a nasty piece of work and Uganda would be a better place if he was gone but experience shows when you send in the troops, it only serves to make a bad situation worse .
At best “Invisible Children” are useful idiots . They are being played like a violin and I can see in my mind’s eye in six months time, President Obama wiping away the tears thinking of the children, as he announces he will have to send more troops into Uganda and at the same time, the stocks of the concerned oil companies rocket skywards .
