That is not exactly new. By default every web server logs the IP address of each computer that goes to every web page.

It isn't the logging that causes concern, but what is done with that information. It is not hard to log all of the user's computer info when a page is viewed. Or, for that matter, to see where the viewers are from.

Most people do not realize that all their activities on the web are recorded, permanently. Guess that common sense is not that common after all.

Cellular towers have always known which mobile phones are connected and can easily triangulate the phone number's location to within a couple hundred meters. The introduction of GPS into most phones has reduced that distance to a couple dozen meters or less. Simply having your phone turned on means that someone who has access to your cell provider's system will know where you are. Again, not new.

Unaccountable monitoring is of great concern, in my opinion. If an agency is monitoring, there better be some warrant, approved by a judge. Secret monitoring of citizens is not cool.

Sure, in theory, if I am doing nothing wrong, I should have nothing to hide. The expectation is that I have the right to privacy. What is the realistic balance between a governments need to protect its citizens from criminals and terrorists, and, its citizens right to live without their government watching their every move & word. Should I worry about a innocent discussion putting me on a watch list? Maybe it should boil down to provable intent. Simply talking about something does not mean one is going to do.

People should think before putting anything on the Internet. Being a bit paranoid would not hurt. I am not condoning tin-foil hats, but that rare common-sense.

{end of ramble}

Didn't say it was new. Just think that folks should be aware of it and act accordingly.

Unaccountable monitoring is of great concern. Government should need to have a warrant to do it. Business have no right to monitor at all. Penalty for monitoring without a warrant should be swift, stiff and permanent.

If you live in any reasonably sized city you're being monitored much more than that, and by individuals & corporations, not just gov't. There are security camera's everywhere, just look how quickly images turn up after a major crime- like the Miami face-eater, as well as people "tagging" you places on facebook etc without you realizing it until you look at your own page. You're being captured in the background of other peoples photo's that are being posted, and you might even end up a meme from an image someone takes of you on the street.

Personally I could care less, I just make sure that if I'm doing something I don't want publicly seen I don't do it in public.
