Always wanted to do a cross country trip in a double decker

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Actually, Patch, there's a picture of your son somewhere on Facebook of your son with Further1.
Worry is a misuse of imagination

She had blue skin, And so did he.
He kept it hid And so did she.
They searched for blue Their whole life through,
Then passed right by- And never knew.”

(I stand corrected on the spelling. Thanks, Nurse Ratched (sp?) .)

London double-deckers are cute, but unrealistic for interstate travel. Seems it is possible to install a modern Cummins engine, but this would not be easy nor cheap. Besides the mechanical issues, the height is over 14 feet, which is the legal limit most places.

Interestingly... There is at least one double-decker in use as public transit in Davis, CA. Not sure if it is the city or UCD who operates it.

Last I read on the interweb, the original Further was scheduled to be dragged out of a field on or near Kesey's farm in Oregon a few years ago, for the purpose of restoration. Don't know if there was any progress.

I believe #2 is still in decent condition and in the hands of Kesey's son.

There are many copies. I met one on Interstate 5 a couple of years ago; almost certainly the one used by the wrestling club at Kesey's alma mater -- Kesey was a supporter.

Back to dusting out Millicent.

[Kinetic Sculpture Stuff from the previous page]

I want to go! I want to go!

It's possible I make it to Ventura. It is much less likely that I get to Baltimore. But once we start talking May I'm 90% likely to make it to Arcata.

I have no sculpture to race in yet, though :( any one need more pilots?

Does anyone on here live in Arcata? My Dad lived a couple of blocks from the college. There were some burners about 3 doors down with a MV. I wasn't a burner at the time so I never knocked on their door and demanded a smile. (Like I would today.)

Kinetic Sculpture Racing:

Image

A lucky shot I took of two racing "sculptures" at the Sacramento race in 2000. The guy who built the barrel-wheeled machine in the foreground (called Drum Roll) is a long time burner.

Generally, there are more people who want to race than there are seats. There simply are not enough of us who bother to build these things. And granted, some mechanical know-how and insight is advisable.

The art, however, such as the "attacking" paper-mache and styrofoam shark in the background of that picture, is well within the abilities of lots of folks.

I have poor mechanical know-how. :( I have electrical know-how, I can festoon your creation with LEDs and blinking things and temperature sensors and stuff! (However, on this forum, I expect everyone else has these skills too. Or at least as good as mine.)

I'm OK with basic electrics, but NOT electronics. So you may get your chance -- I'm planning to resurrect Lady Sophia, a small MV that was gifted to me in 2010. She will need a lot of festooning.

There is a double decker sitting in a used car lot Her in SLC. Looks like it would be a fun project. Didn't know about the height though. Even at that it loos like it would be scary going around corners at freeway speeds.
