The Grand Sierra in Reno is planning a 3 day DJ party Sept 1-3, 2014. So here we have the hotel making bank from years of Doc Pyro's hard work, DJ's making bank by being paid, Reno making bank with extra visitors, an opportunity for all to make bank without getting dusty. This lays the groundwork for a weeks long hotel "festival" in Reno bracketing the FITD, which could easily be followed with the same in cities with larger numbers of burners. Does Depressurization = DecompressionTM? The "Electric Dusty Festival"?

Of course this means everyone needs two sets of festival costumes too, dusty and not dusty.

The Bass Coast Festival August 1-4, 2014, held on First Nation land in Merritt BC Canada has banned native headdresses from the event. The ban will be enforced by festival security.

burning man is a PARTICIPATORY sport.

if we dilute the interactive nature of the event, with more "concerts" and "venues" all we will be left with is "a cess-pool of ravers."

( a quote from a good friend of mine, who IS a raver, btw )

it's about the ART, it's about the PEOPLE YOU MEET, it's about the IDEAS that you share and the LOVE that you spread.

that sunrise set was awesome, but it is empty calories....you cannot sustain yourself on it.

you will die eventually.

heed my warning....MAKE MORE ART, and INTERACT or you will just be another face in a faceless crowd...

another "Festy", another "Bucket list Destination".

i'm sorry, but it's our HOME goddammit, and i WILL fight to defend it.

BTW.....i just got back, and Next Year WAS better.....

I've followed this thread and your ranting about how people should burn your way, and how your definition of the event is the one the group must conform to, is just off. If you don't like how other people choose to burn that's your problem, not theirs.

Yes, yes, by all means, use a big font and scream like it's 1994 and you just discovered the internet, but how about a real discussion instead?

I sincerely doubt your'e going to convince anyone who doesn't already agree with you by just yelling at them.

You say it threatens the livelihood of the event. I don't think it does. I'm sure it doesn't affect the livelihood of the event in fact, as witnessed by the ever-increasing demand for tickets.

What it does is threaten to continue the eternal process of change the event has appeared to undergone. You've been going a lot longer than I have. About as long as many of my friends. You all tell stories of how it's evolved. Even in the five years I've gone I've seen it evolve. I gather that you yourself, with Root Society, were partly responsible for one part of BM's evolution, and I've heard that camp listed as one of the camps that "ruined BM" by "turning it into a rave". Not my words, but the words of someone with a lot less tolerance for sound camps than either of us have.

I go first and foremost for the people, with art and music close behind.

I've only disliked about 3-4 people I've ever met on the playa, and none this year, so from my perspective, people are mainly people out there, regardless of their interests out there. The people who don't grok the culture probably won't come back. Too much of a pain in the ass compared to going to concerts where you just show up and buy things. Others will experience things at BM that go far beyond "raves" because how can you not. It's impossible to walk around and not experience other things. Some of the folks who come just because they heard Skrillex and Diplo were there last year will be captivated by the culture and become radically included, which is kind of the idea isn't it? The same way Grover Norquist appears to have discovered that BM, as seen through his lens, is his own kind of little heaven on earth.

I think there's a legitimate worry about the people who put together big art projects out of passion will be less interested in doing so if they feel like they're being piggy-backed on too much by large sound camps that are shadow-promoting brands though as BM gets bigger there should be more money available for art grants as well to help smooth the path for those hyper-ambitious artists.

Music is obviously not going anywhere. If anything I heard more live music this year than the last couple, including a rocking celtic bagpipe band one afternoon out somewhere.

So what's the problem exactly? I'm trying to understand why you're so angry.

Also just for the record, I don't think "rave boy" is exactly accurate. I'm 42, married, two dogs, and maybe go to one festival that isn't Burning Man every 3 years or so. Never been to EDC, Ultra, or even Coachella. Too many people packed into too small a place.

I love to dance at Burning Man though, and I like to do it at big sound camps sometimes. I don't really care who's playing most of the time as I've never heard of most of the DJs outside of BM (other than the big names or the perennial performers) and I don't DJ hop. I did specifically go see Skrillex and Diplo at OT this year, and had a blast, though I wasn't impressed with their set.

I just don't understand the alarmism. If I don't want to have my ears blasted out at Apex or Opulent or whatever it's easy enough to go do something else somewhere else. This idea that BM is under some kind of terrible threat doesn't ring true to me.
