Flood the playa!

Postby lemur » Wed May 15, 2013 4:56 pm

ok yeah

s0 somehow i ended up here:

Image

Under the Truth Banner we will green the deserts with freshwater resources that presently flow unused into the sea, because the truth is that the principles do exist to easily channel the outflow of the Amazon River through arteries submerged in the oceans, to Africa as a resource to turn the Sahara into a garden of life for human living and into an oasis that the coming Ice Age cannot touch.

Yep, just a weed. And on the USDA's noxious and invasive plants list:

http://plants.usda.gov/java/noxComposite

Puts it in the same category as Johnsongrass, which does a cornfield no good at all.

Interesting, though..It's not considered a noxious weed in Nevada, whereas Johnsongrass is not considered a noxious weed in Minnesota. The things you learn......

Yes, but it's only considered a noxious weed in five states, and is not considered one Federally.

Nah, let's fuck with it. If we want to talk about global climate change, let's also talk about net global benefits that could come from it too. Hopefully things will continue to warm up, giving us more arable land in the northern hemisphere where most of the land is anyway.

"More severe" weather? I'm not convinced. Maybe more severe for currently populated regions, but not severe overall. People have short memories anyway and any "severe weather" they perceive in the present will feel worse than the past -- especially predating their birth. They'll adapt. We could use a great culling anyway.

And what about everyone else? Sinking low-lying islands and coast? Who cares? Immigrate somewhere else appropriate. Sub-Sahara Africa? Whatever. Since when did people ever give a shit about that region in any context?

Still, I wouldn't be happy if the playa turned into some humid shithole. Then again, that may be a (another) good reason to leave those counties in Nevada for somewhere else.

Hmmm......I didn't know that the USDA is not considered a Federal agency. Or are you saying that it's only considered an 'invasive' plant species in the rest of the states depicted on the map, and not noxious?

It shouldn't be too hard to fix, if NV DOT has got their game together.

It depends, though, on where the money is coming from. Most DOTs are cash-strapped right now. Some are even on a 'maintenance only' footing. I'll take a look around, and make a few calls to a few geotechnical people I know in NV DOT.

Don't worry, yggy, there will be plenty left when we get there. I plan on going over to Virgin Valley again, east of Denio Junction, to go opal hunting this year.

do you go in the mine, or just near? I found some nice blue opal inclusions and some have "fire", just north of Lovelock.
