My understanding is that they are late cretaceous fossils.

Vulture Chow, have a GREAT time.

The Late Cretaceous was a happening time. Dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurusruled the land . The Cretaceous seas had hadrosaurs, large crabs, squid, a whole passel of species. Sometimes they got pretty big. There's one species of clam, Exogyra ponderosa, which was a full three feet across. Saurians and orinthiscian dinosaurs have been found in the Hell Creek Formation in Montana, where Jack Horner and the rest of the crew at Montana State University and the Museum of the Rockies found Maiasaurus eggs in clutches indicating that dinosaurs of that genera cared for their young.

Notable finds have also been made in the Late Cretaceous Coon Creek Formation of Tennessee (Yale's Peabody Museum of Natural History got a huge collection of specimens), the McNairy Formation (same state, but also in Missouri where hadrosaur parts have been found at the Chronister site near Marble Hill in Bollinger County, and many other localities.

In Missouri near Sikeston in the Porter's Creek Clay are remnants of what ended it all, but the first evidence was found by geologist Walter Alvarez at U Cal Berkeleyin a place called Gubbio, Italy. There, at the Cretacous-Tertiary boundary layer he found a sudden increase in the amount of iridium present in the clay. His postulate changed our understanding of extinction and the rare events that may cause it. There could only be two possible explanations for an iridium spike that large, one being volcanism. Indeed, in India, the Deccan Plateau was being built by the addition of great floods of basalt. It was the other explanation that now has become generally accepted for the extinction of the dinosaurs, A MASSIVE strike by an extraterrestrial object, either a meteorite or cometary body. The crater of that strike is called Chixculub, and is just offshore of the Yucatan Penninsula in Mexico. The iridium layer has been found worldwide in many other locations where the so-called Cretaceous-Tertiary, or K-T boundary is known to occur.

So, you have sharks, giant clams, meteorites, flood basalts, and extinction. A very happening time. I wish I could be with you to show you the wonder of it all. ENJOY!

And THANK YOU for the link!

Oh (((Fishy))) so sorry! Things generally do break, and at the most inconvenient time, usually. :?

Sorry to have been away, happy to be back, too much family drama going on.

And now I am stuck at my computer, waiting for a response from my work IT people, so, finally a chance to catch up with all I have missed. 8)

Chair is crippled. Van gizmo isn't working. Very stranded right now.

Strand is, I think, a name for beach. It's the name of an embankment in london. Fleet Street gets its name from the river, now culverted, that ran there.

My quick fossil hunting trip this morning was cut short by a scary call from my mother. Dad was disoriented and not well. Luckily just a bad flu and very high temp. Got some fluids at the hospital and is now home asking for a corned beef sandwich.

Anywho, here are my finds from Big Brook:

belemnites

I'm guessing partial goblin shark tooth

Sawfish tooth

Crow Shark

Mammal Bone. Probably modern, but definitely fossilized.

My son feels stranded.. The transmission on the big Harley went toes up.. Dad has to take him to school... Dad said, "Do you want Daddy to take to school to play with the other kids?".

alrighty, drinks all around. Sunny afternoon, beers and rootbeers? Good to see you at the Bar MDF!

VC, are you watching the very cool PBS series called something like "finding you inner fish"? I watched the first episode yesterday and really enjoyed it. finding a common ancestor way way way back. Examines how as embryos, all fish, reptiles, mammals, are basically identical up to a point in our development, and then just riffs on the latest discoveries and studies around this.

Yep. I'm in for a beer and some PBS. I love evolutionary biology. I initially went to school with the intent to get a degree in marine ecology with a focus on sharks. Then the math dept. poached me. So this sounds fascinating.

Though I have to start baking too. Need 80 meringue cookies for passover tomorrow.

Busy day.

Yeah, sort of the opposite with me yet similar: started in zoology, loved the biology and anatomy, but hit the wall with calculus and thermodynamics. Sent me lurching off to liberal arts. One of the most visionary of my friends was a mathematician, his ability to visualize problems was barely describable and it frustrated him that I gave up so easily on the math. I couldn't see the beauty in it that he did.

Wow! The bar has had a lot of traffic today..
*waves to everyone*
Fishy - sorry you are stranded. Stupid broken gizmo thing...
VC - sorry your trip was cut short, I'm glad your dad is ok. Those are some cool finds.
Elo - I am glad that there are people that have enough time on their hands to create things like that banjo box for the rest of us to enjoy.
I spent a little more time on the aluminet today. It's a little weird being alone in the theatre - especially backstage. Nothing strange happened, I was just uber aware of sounds and such.
