Ooops, it was only 112 degrees. I just went out and took a ground temp, 137. The "official" air temperature at heli's Grapevine Ranger Station Ranch and Resort is now 104 degrees, humidity a whopping 3 percent. Too damn humid.
Rian, all is good. Been working on clothing for the playa and playing with our new laptop.

Thanks BuckIt! Bye, Sput!

What have ya been making, Heli? I just made a bunch of crap, and got to wear the orange chaps and the silver skirt that you probably saw pics of from the stitch and bitch last month.

Hey, Bucket, we can raise the gifting issue here, if someone hasn't already. I haven't looked around much to see what's new. I am kinda with those that want to discourage the trinkets.

I took a crack at it in the Philosophy of Burning Man forum (I think that's what it's called.) I will go look for the link. It's funny, I feel like Rip Van Winkle; I woke up one day and people were giving away crap left and right.

Thanks for the beer!

I will check it out in a few, I am headed over to home despot to get some more pieces parts. I don't like the trinket giving. I don't mind receiving a gift, but it should the the result of an interaction between people, not the purpose of it. Some just handing out things to someone just happening to walk by isn't what I think it should be about. One of the nicest "trinkets" I got, though, was the result of mistaken identity. I saw someone there that I thought I knew and hadn't seen in a long time. It turns out it was someone else but we sat and talked about life and stuff. She gave me a necklace she had made herself. Nothing fancy, plastic beads on monofiliment fishing line. I haven't taken it off since.

The gift came as a result of our interaction and is a symbol of a bond, however fleeting, that we shared for a few minutes of talking in the cafe. The gift wasn't the purpose of the interaction. Even a trinket can be special if there is something of the giver attached to it in some way. If someone walks up on the street and hands me a trinket, will I remember who gave it to me in three hours time? If someone walks over and engages in conversation, maybe shares some stories or a meal or drink before continuing on their way, yeah, I think maybe the trinket will be more memorable because it serves as a reminder of the person.

If you haven't taken the time to talk to me for 5 minutes or even tell me your name ... please, don't give me the trinket. Save it for when you have a more worthwhile interaction with someone.

Oh, anyone has the right to offer anything to anyone. I don't have to accept it, though. In fact, you just gave me an idea. Maybe if someone is just handing crap out to people walking by and tries to hand me one, maybe I will make them earn that giving. Maybe I will require a little more interaction before I accept it because the other side of the story is ... if you are just standing there handing things out, are you going to remember who you gave them to in 10 minutes time? Both sides of the transaction should be meaningful. If someone is just handing out things to passersby and the transactions have no meaning and aren't remembered than the gift, no matter how much it cost in mony is really meaningless. Why would I want to collect meaningless gifts? It has almost become a parody of giving by over-giving.

It has almost become a parody of
ITYM it has.

Not that I don't encourage thoughtful giving.... but it seems like it might not be the wisest plan to promote thoughtless giving.
