Re: PANIC!! Button of DOOOOOM!
Big deal. Nobody knows why these quakes occur.
For all we know, it could be the Farallon plate buried under the North American plate. They do that, you know. Look up "LITHOPROBE", the Canadian geophysical traverse that went across all of Canada. They found out that plates stack atop one another when they finally subduct out of sight.
Similar quakes yielded a 5.0 in Reno in 2008 and a 5.0 in Adel, Oregon in 1968.
Read the CNN blurb on it.

Re: PANIC!! Button of DOOOOOM!
No, I'm not going to 'school' you. You've done a pretty good job yourself. I'm just trying to say that without additional evidence in Nevada, we really don't know what's going on with the earthquake swarm there and it would be best if people weren't worked up over a doomsday scenario that the current state of affairs doesn't support.
Earthquake swarms happened in advance of Mount St. Helens eruption, but they occurred all around the base of the mountain. Earthquake swarms are even happening in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and North Dakota today, all seemingly caused by the reinjection of fracing wastewater. What's happening in Nevada? I don't know.

Re: PANIC!! Button of DOOOOOM!
The point of this thread is to capture the scaremongering of modern American media with its never ending parade of doooooom. So please understand: We are all going to die, and according to the news it'll be this week, and it is vital that aliens that discover our dead society, and eplaya, know that the last thing posted in here was what actually killed us.^Rhino! wrote:What impending deaths?1durphul wrote:Seriously, can we get back to our impending deaths?theCryptofishist wrote:two more pages of this crap? People die every day. There's no reason to get all upset and start stirring up shit that's not even there. Unless one feeds on drama.

I strongly suggest everybody listen to Unjohn. (After all, he's a living fossil and he likely knew some of these techtonic plates back when they were part of some rogue asteroid. Hehehe)

Nope, the plates cooled as Earth did.GreyCoyote wrote:I strongly suggest everybody listen to Unjohn. (After all, he's a living fossil and he likely knew some of these techtonic plates back when they were part of some rogue asteroid. Hehehe)
For living fossils try the ginkgo tree, cockroaches, Lingula the inarticulate brachiopod, and a few others that have 200 million year-plus pedigrees. unjohn woulda been dust after a fraction of that amount of time.

Re: PANIC!! Button of DOOOOOM!
I've got a great sense of humor. But when you put words in my mouth that are contrary to those that my professional judgement would indicate (and I do this stuff for a living, mind you, and do it well enough to be recognized as an engineering geologist who deals with seismology and earthquakes), you're crossing the line. I have to pay money to the government annually to renew my licensure, and that's something that design professionals can be serious about, because making statements that are contrary to the profession's standard practices can wind me up in front of a review board. If I were Italian, NOT making some kind of statement might land me in JAIL. I happen to be eligible for a European license to practice, and don't want to endanger that eligibility.1durphul wrote:When did you get to be so humorless?^Rhino! wrote:

As far as my tongue not being firmly being implanted in my cheek - you dip....I started using the crunchy and not the creamy peanut butter.

Ok. New plan for this thread: Everything EXCEPT anything pertaining to geology is fair game for humor, hyperbole and DOOM.
Geology is serious stuff. Lets leave those poor rocks alone.
