RE: Rent Strike

Setting aside the worker bee hives of high priced, high rise apartments in urban areas, we need to give a little considerations to the mom and pop operations in small towns who acquired a couple of houses that they rent out at reasonable prices to supplement their retirement income.

A general rent strike would really impact people who work hard to take care of their tenants and provide needed housing in areas without many apartments and condos.

It's easy to speak in glittering generalities without considering the full impact of a general rent strike. And where do you supposes those worker bees are going to go if they get evicted for non-payment of rent? The free standing single family rental homes and duplexes. Good luck getting a lease with an eviction on your record.

I like my landlord. Discussions are underway where I am attempting to explain to him that the purpose of a rent strike is to leverage collective power against landlords who then can leverage their collective power against the banks to relieve mortgages.

This is how strikes work. This is how civil disobedience works, it makes things terribly inconvenient for those in higher class stations. It's going to suck for a lot of people, because it already sucks for a lot of people. And what those mom and pop landlords may not realize is their level of privilege that allows them to accumulate wealth and equity while those that rent from them do not. A rent strike allows for an opportunity for landlords to gain that awareness.

If a large enough amount of people don't pay rent, the states capacity to punish by eviction becomes non-existent. If enough people don't pay their mortgage the financial industries ability to foreclose and seize also diminishes.

By challenging the institution of private ownership of something that belongs to all humans (land) we can begin to breakdown the class divisions between the labor class and the owner class.

If they depend on my rent to pay their mortgage then who is providing who with housing?

Oh and I live in a small town. The housing market here is inflated and almost all rentals are owned by speculators and managed by rental agencies. Not sure where these 'mom and pop' landlords you speak of are.

You sure the rent strike won't just further consolidate the housing market?

The .1% stealing from the 1%... what few mom and pop owners get demoted to renters, rental agents get fired, bigger banks scoop up homes owned by the smaller banks.

The strike damn sure ain't promoting a renter to an owner... just gonna make the rich richer...

Just like the stimulus checks are only gonna further transfer wealth to the haves from the have nots.

Sit around and do nothing, that's how you succeed!

Musician Britney Spears is a friend of the BRCCP! Now, about that Hilton?

To Simon's post, yes, the flow of rescue dollars to wealth and concentration of wealth forces through the pandemic are shameful.

To A-Rock, I believe we need to dismantle the wealth concentration of landlords with more than a handful of units for retirement. Obviously that is where the Trump-Kushners made their money. It inflates housing prices.

U.S. oil futures prices fell to their lowest-ever level on Monday at 1 cent per barrel, breaking the previous record near $10 set in 1986, as policymakers struggled to address the glut of crude that has seen the industry reverse a decade-long boom and sink into a deep recession that threatens to push dozens of companies into bankruptcy.

Fuck that. Challenge the very system that is predicated upon the idea that someone has to pay someone else to live somewhere. Redistributing treats a symptom, restructuring addresses the root cause.

With things like Universal Basic Income and Universal Healthcare, ie: social welfare that removes scarcity from the equation, the need for real estate as a retirement investment is negated. And even in a retirement situation, the concept of inequality is still fundamental, one person works and pays, the other collects and builds equity/accumulates wealth.

The facts are clear: the wealthiest 0.54%, about 40 million people, are responsible for 14% of lifestyle-related greenhouse gas emissions, while the bottom 50% of income earners, almost 4 billion people, only emit around 10%. The world's top 10% income earners are responsible for at least 25% and up to 43% of our environmental impact.

Cynicism is defeatism
