Hey, Seattle and Portland folk....

Post by Tin Halo » Tue Nov 18, 2014 4:41 pm

Can't really elaborate on why I'm asking, but I'm curious what route to BRC you've taken that works best.
I'm seeing left at Eugene to 97/140/39/139/299/8a/34...puts you coming to the desert from the north.
Does that route work or does it have trials and tribulations similar to the 447 North route thru Empire, etc.?
Or...what's the best route from your locations?

http://gwally.com/directions/cat_routes.php. Each route has its advantages. Check for scheduled roadwork closer to the event.

Choice:
shop in KFalls much larger, places to sleep/visit Crater Lake/ shop in Eugene vs
shop in Lakeview, much smaller, visit Summer Lake Hot Springs/ recommended/ visit Bend possibly
if you like I5 and you like Ashland (t is very likeable), you can also take 66 Ashland to KFalls

All the above have fuel, spirits fill up in Alturas, and last minute items/ BBQ/ tacos/ fuel depending on the hour in Cedarville.

That's a very helpful site!
I was using Google Maps, just to start with, and when I typed in a more accurate start location I was made aware of routes very much like the last two on that list.

Much studying to be done.

I'm not from Portland or Seattle but I can tell don't go 8A to 34. When you're on 299, you'll come into Cedarville, CA as mentioned. Make a right in Cedarville on, I think it's Modoc county highway 1. You'll be going in a southerly direction. This will turn into Washoe county highway 447 when you cross into Nevada which will bring you into Gerlach. It's all paved. If you stay on 299 out of Cedarville, the road turns graded dirt in Nevada which is Washoe county road 8A and will take you to the "town" of Vya. From there you would take Washoe county road 34 which is also graded dirt and will take you to Gerlach. It is graded dirt but has wheel ruts as well as a stream crossing. It's a pretty drive if you have at least a 2WD pick up but will take alot longer. It will take you past fly geyser as well.
Good luck to you and just use your judgment.

At present - and for the foreseeable future - I'll have the Jeep 4WD so the 'unpolished' section of road wouldn't be quite so bad. But the reality is, if I have to make this particular journey I'll be towing shit so paved road is a plus. And Fly Geyser sounds intriguing.

In the 'best of luck category' this entire endeavour won't be necessary. We'll see.

I've done a lot of routes a lot of times, and from the perspective of someone traveling in a heavily loaded truck & trailer, I like the route of I-5 to Eugene, then 58 to 97 and south into Alturas and Cedarville, south out of Cedarville to 447.
I find the hills a little more gradual and it's the least amount of "middle of nowhere", somewhere you don't want to be if you have a breakdown of any sort.
It's the one Odwally outlines, and I agree with him.

I completely agree with the captain and take that route for the reasoning he has. I'm just south of Portland Oregon driving to the burn in a light commercial box truck and trailer. It seems to be a better fuel economy route too. However I drove the 8A/34 last early summer on the way to a "work weekend" and found it to be the best condition gravel road I have ever traveled. EVER! EPIC!!! That was in a Prius pulling a trailer. So. HA!!!!!! Probably averaged 45 to 50 MPH. Saved time over 447 to the work ranch but would have not saved time to 12 mile if there was no wait on HWY 34 if coming to the event from 447. The views were EPIC!!!!! Didn't see another moving vehicle for over 60 miles.

No probelms -

From The Tacoma Narrows Bridge I take

I5 south to Eugene Oregon
Turn East onto 58 Stop and get gas and lunch here.
Head to Klamath falls,
South and follow the signs, You cant go wrong.

Mapquest actually nails this route. I have driven to Gerlach at least 100 times and Winnemucca Nevada at least another 100 from Puget Sound. If I leave at breakfast - I can eat a late dinner 10.5 hours later in Gerlach.

Although I always recommend supporting the businesses in Gerlach, the car wash for the schools outbound, and Bruno's is an experience, Gerlach can be congested inbound and outbound. So suggest filling up in Alturas or Cedarville with enough gas to get in and out without going into Gerlach. Fly Geyser is now owned by BM, they may close it during the event, worth a check if you are planning to visit it.

On a side note.... with some tinkering I'm gearing up to do, gas mileage may not be that much of a consideration.

This is my preferred route as well.

I usually never stop in the streets of Gerlach though. For anyone who's never taken this route, note: at the junction (several hours after Cedarville and Eagleville) Gerlach will be off to your right, but you needn't pass through. BRC will be to your left (eventually).

I'm a big fan of the Wally Routes. I used #1 i think, until i found the dirt road way in that i'll use forevermore. I'd have to see a map to come up with that one, but it's Wally Route #1 with a different last hour of driving.
