That's a bit disappointing. It does take a long time. (30 to 40 minutes.) Knowledge is power. The folks on this board are particularly fond of the event. Where else can we get the information to negotiate, continue and improve it? "The information is also used by the Burning Man organization to improve the event and to better represent the interests of the people of Black Rock City in negotiations with authorities in the state of Nevada and the US federal government. " Everyone else... If you have the time and patience between now and the 15th please fill out the online census. If you plan to go to future events you are doing it for YOU. I think it's fun and interesting. Thanks!!

Today's been a bit of a trip down musical memory lane. A little while ago, I had submitted an application to a program that would potentially enable me to share some of my mixes online through streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify, in a manner that would ensure that the artists whose music I was playing and remixing would get proper credit and payment... and this morning I was notified that my application had been accepted.

Now I'm reviewing their criteria for file types, sound quality, cover art resolution, and other finer points... and uploading some of the sets I've recorded over the last few years. Fun stuff, and lots of nostalgia... but still lots to try and go through and originals to try and find...

Regarding the census, would it make sense to have two versions, the EZ version which provides a certain level of useful generic info, followed by the option to continue on with more personal and invasive questions? I understand if that just seems to complicate the effort unnecessarily. Still, I recall my friend who I camped with last year mentioning that he bailed out of the census because he felt it was too intrusive. I went ahead and completed mine, though I see his point. It seems to me that the results gathered from someone uncomfortable with the process are likely to be skewed, which doesn't do anyone any good. Just my two cents..

Oh, and congrats on getting your music application accepted Trilo.

From the first page of the Census:
Study Withdrawal: Your participation is voluntary. If you choose to take part, you have the right to stop at any time. You may choose not to answer any question or end all participation in the study at any time without any prejudice.
The only questions you have to answer are the first two, "Is this the first time you have filled out a Black Rock City Census form online this year?" and "Was this your first time visiting Black Rock City?". Skip any of the others that appear to be to intrusive. I think those two are required so that everyone only fills out the census once and that that they have actually gone to BRC.
Give it a look and skip the parts you don't like. However the more information you can give the better future events can be planned and the gives the Borg more ammunition to argue with BLM and different County's.

Thanks for the clarification Ulisse, it's been over a year since I filled mine out, and I guess I'm fuzzy on the details of the process. Meanwhile, please don't get me wrong, I think having some means to provide pertinent feedback to the people who enable the event to happen every year is a good idea.

Yes. Unfortunately, this is in the middle of a long document that strongly resembles the "Terms Of Service" formality which... I dare say most of us routinely scroll to the bottom of without reading, just so we can click on "I agree" and get on with it.

Then, on the next page, we read this:
"Your survey responses will not be saved until you have completed the survey, clicked "Submit," and reached the thank-you page that confirms submission.
If you are somewhere with inconsistent internet access or do not have time to complete the entire survey now, please come back later when you will have time to complete the survey uninterrupted."

Between these two, there is not one word to point out that partial responses will still be recorded. Rather, I interpreted it to be highly likely that partial responses would not be recorded.

Especially, this phrase is unclear:
"You may choose not to answer any question...."

Much better would be...
"You may choose not to answer any one question or several questions. The answers you have given will still be recorded."
In which case I would have completed the census with roughly 75% of the questions answered.

I agree it could have been worded better but I still say the it is important to fill out the Census. The more people who fill it out the more accurate and useful it is.

Thanks for the input about those notifications at the start of the online Census survey! The informed consent statement on the first page has to include a lot of information, so we may not be able to cut it down much. That said, the message on the second page could definitely be worded more clearly. We'll review both before next year's survey to improve clarity.

If anyone has questions/comments about the Census survey, we're reachable anytime at [email protected]. Finally, if you haven't already completed this year's survey, it closes on October 15th and we're hoping to hear from as many of this year's Burners as possible - even if you choose to skip some questions!

Happy belated birthday, UnJon!! Perhaps instead of the hooch a nice root beer or ginger ale might be just the thing. In the ginger ale department I'm partial to Vernor's, some really great stuff from my hometown. It started up just before the civil war, the founder was experimenting with trying to get just the right syrup recipe... then he got called up to fight, and instead of dumping his batch he sealed it up in oak barrels. When he returned years later, he found that the aged flavor was really something special. It tastes great on its own, mixed with other things, and even done up as an ice cream float (my grandmother called it a Boston cooler).

Cheers and happy birthday!

48 hours, and I'm still the only one here?
Is there a 2017 Bar already, and nobody told me?
Or are you all busy battening the hatches for the approaching rain?

Regardless.... I did something fun recently, and the result has arrived.

Willow del Sol, by Jack Gescheidt

Nature-loving photographer Jack Gescheidt has been promoting the myriad benefits of trees for over ten years with his TreeSpirit Project, combining trees and humans in most of his images. And last Saturday he shot this near Sacramento. Pretty cool.
Note the mallard in the near left corner. Attention to detail! Yes, Jack is definitely an artist.

Traveller... there are 850 photos on my Photobucket, with a number of pedal-powered amphibious vehicles. All mine use paddle wheels. But propellers are more efficient.
