Hi Marty! Good to see you stopping by more often these days. I've mostly been snuggled up in the NEB lately, kind of regrouping for a bit. I hope you're safe from all of the wildfires out that way. It looks bad from what I've seen on the news. Meanwhile, I hope you are continuing to find time to make your art along with all of the many other pursuits you're involved in.
And MDF as well! Almost like old times seeing you both here. Yeah, apparently it was a tough burn this year for quite a few folks, myself included.
*waves to ygmir and Au, pours drinks for all*
Cheers!

Re: The Bar 2017 Edition
Lots of folks told me it was a bad year for them in some way. I don't know why. Maybe mass hysteria -- one person said it and the rest copied that because it seemed new and exiting?
Of course, the heat, and the highly-unusual lack of wind to counter that heat, was certainly a factor for many.
Me... I had an absolutely horrible year. But that was all my fault -- my old mental health trouble catching up with me all at once -- and the heat did not affect me much.
Well, I'm now on my way out the door -- to Decom in San Francisco.

I had a pretty great year. Yeah, there were a few irritants but all in all, one of my best. Sometimes after the burn I’m not so excited about the next one. This year the i’m excited to go back in 2018

Re: The Bar 2017 Edition
One of the first to greet me at Decom was Ratty! Woohoo!
But Decom was too noisy for me. It was impossible to get away from all the Loud Sound Art. All conversation had to be done by shouting in each other's ear.
Seems to me... conversation is the most important element of any gathering of humans.
I really do try not to judge anyone else's taste in Sound Art (and any other art), but one of those Loud Sound Art camps surely emitted pure noise.
On the upside, I connected with several people who are rapidly becoming more important in my life, so... very much worth the trip!

Re: The Bar 2017 Edition
First Decom that i've missed in many years. Agree with you, Elliot, conversation and connection have always been the magic of Burners for me. Seems the fires and smoke have caused many in Marin to stay home. Movie house empty on Friday night and no traffic over the Golden Gate Bridge to SF last evening. North Beach was really jumping however. Had a great dinner at the North Beach restaurant (Italian).
Stunning article in the SF Chronicle about the fire this morning. Scary. Immense tragedy.

Greetings friends, neighbors, co-conspirators, burners, malcontents and ne'er-do-wells! **tries to totally ignore the stinking hippies and tolerates the bathed ones.
I told you I'd pop in on an unpredictable basis.
I love you all and miss you. Thank you Goathead for the post card; it means a LOT.
I am now entering my 3rd semester as a PhD candidate in geology, becoming an expert in a narrow area. My dissertation topic is a multifaceted narrow area I'll simply call "dust geohazards". I took a top-tier PhD level course ,my second semester, and the prof. said I could have taught it. Of course I got an "A" for the semester's work. Balancing it all with my normal work is a challenge, but I'm holding up.
At the first of the summer I taught a course for University Extension as a part of their critically-acclaimed Civil War series. Mine was called "Engineering Victory" , an examination of how the North won the war. Next fall will be a two-day field trip that mixes geology with history called "Terrain and Geologic Influences on the Civil War in Eastern Missouri". Plus, I'll be giving a presentation this coming spring on Birge's Western Sharpshooters. My expertise increases in focus and breadth daily.
And I'm still paid to come to work Monday through Friday. This year I get my 25-year anniversary luncheon. The service award was a brand-new Cuisinart Panini grill.
PM me if you care or if you don't. All I can say is that things are rolling at breakneck speed, and I'm enjoying riding the lightning.

Re: The Bar 2017 Edition
Good morning bar! Yes I agree, Marty, I miss ygmir too! No hof this year, no burn for me, and no uuu for ygmir this weekend. Waaaaaah!
Letting a habit slip after ten consecutive burns, I didn't miss it like I thought I would. I did go see the burn from a turnout a couple of miles away, got home and slept cleanly. This may be a recurring approach, saving money, staying clean, and not humping the dusty contents of my car and closet up and down stairs for days. I'll need the desire to return. Years of doing it as a matter of course are over.

yeah damn, been a year I've missed a ton of stuff. seems life got super busy, attitude got crappy, and a few health issues, conspired against me. I miss you, and the others.Elorrum wrote:Good morning bar! Yes I agree, Marty, I miss ygmir too! No hof this year, no burn for me, and no uuu for ygmir this weekend. Waaaaaah!

Marty is sorely missed, by me, but I think I can speak for others, too.
I'm sorta on the fence, as you are, about "needing to go".......pondering.......
I'm sure hoping the road to the Hof will be workable next year. If not, I'll make a ton of signs and try to get folks in the "alternate route", which is not a bad road, just longer and more complicated...
Nice to see Rhino popping in!!

Does anyone know how to get passed the password for 2ndLife?
Seems there is a burn coming days, though the life does not accept any password.

Re: The Bar 2017 Edition

Good to "see" you, Rhino! And with your accomplishments... I regret flunking out of college.
In other news -- bar-related news, it happens to be....
Ygmir's FrankenPiano has been found and recovered! It was in the "real" Black Hole Bar some years ago, and then it... vanished.
How does one lose a grand piano on tree-stump legs? That's what we wondered too.
But it was in Gerlach the whole time. And it looks to have survived just fine. (That means I went to Gerlach / BRC four times this year. LOL )
So... it will be back on Playa. (But not in the bar mentioned above.)

Good morning campers.
We are going to the Utah Decomp on the 28th. Worst weekend to pick, that's also Witchstock in Ogden and I wanted to go to that. But we were asked nicely, and we see so little of our community these days, it seems a good idea.
Way to go Rhino. Well done.

Sure. I'll have a beer. It was a great day today. A planning meeting with some Sacramento burners. They go all out when it comes to Christmas floats. Oh heck. I'll just have a root beer float. Yummie.

Doc Pyro says it is YGMIR'S birthday today!!!
Why would he say that if it's not true?
I guess it could be a ruse or some other kind of sick prank...
Well, I can't take that chance.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!
(AND MANY MANY MANY MORE)
There are a lot of us that will raise a glass and celebrate you, just being you.
You are a one of a kind and definitely a Burner's Burner. I would share my water with you in the desert.
Love and Kisses

By golly, it looks like it IS his birthday today -- for another 30-some minutes!
