Solar Eclipse 2017

I am going to drive up I-5 on August 20 to someplace in central Oregon (probably Bend) in order to be able to get to the area of totality. Madras is looking like a strong contender. I also have an extra half-dozen pairs of dark "glasses" that are approved to watch eclipses with. When the near-total eclipse in 2012 occurred, I used them and they're fantastic. But I digress. My question is this: Is there any place between say Eugene and Bend where burners intend to congregate to watch the eclipse? I'll bring the absinthe.

Also, you can use a welding helmet/goggles/lens, as long as the shade is #14. some use a little lighter or darker, but 14 is what is recommended. YMMV.

As of yet unsure if I'll be on the playa on eclipse day or not, but if not I am hatching a similar plan! Madras is actually the best place in the nation (lowest likelihood of cloud cover @ eclipse time) to see totality, but I'm anxious about traffic between Bend and Madras.

Totally down for a meet up if I'm not on playa by then. I'll bring booze.

I'm sure there'll be alot of Burners at the Eclipse Festival in Oregon... I'm thinking about going to that but it'll cut into my Playa funds...

So I think I'm just gonna head up to Idaho... maybe Oregon but they get cloudier weather so it might not be as visible.

Never seen an eclipse so I think it's worth the trip.

I-5 will be hellscape of traffic, and you will have to sleep in your car if you can even find a place to park it. I would recommend going much farther east than Madras. We'll either be taking 14 out of Portland as far as we can before crossing the Columbia south, or getting stuck in traffic early and noping back home to watch 99% of an eclipse. Really, really want to see this and have been looking forward to it for years, but can't afford to get stuck for several days in rural Oregon.

I live in Eureka, CA, and read a blog called the Lost Coast Outpost and they have had several articles linking to Oregon newspapers. The gist is that every place you can camp or get a hotel has been booked for most of the last year. Reference -

I do not mean to rain on anyone's parade but unless you have a place to stay it is sounding to me like it will be an event that you can not describe with out using the work cluster.

OK, I have it all figured out. I've reserved a MADclipse Daytripper Parking pass in Madras, OR. The bad news is that it says, and I quote, "...This is a family-friendly parking lot. No alcohol, drugs, or fires allowed..." We'll see about that. You'll note it doesn't say word one about no nudity or excessive noise. Time to start the revolution.

A few days before the eclipse the annual Perseid meteor shower takes place.
August 12 into the 13th is supposed to be the best.

But if the predicted one million visitors in Oregon’s path of totality for the Aug. 21 eclipse don’t properly prepare or aren’t paying attention, that show won’t be the celestial dance they came for. It’ll be a cosmic traffic jam on the roads below.
ODOT will have crews posted along critical travel routes to keep motorists mobile and safe, and will be providing travel updates via Tripcheck.com and 511 so you can be prepared with the most current travel information available. Properly supplied and informed, we all can avoid becoming “highway luna(r)-tics” during the eclipse.

The East side of the Cascades: Locally, we have been advised to stock-up on food and gasoline, at least 3-4 days before the event, and stay off the roads for a couple days before and afterward. (Imagine the highway to BRC with a million people all trying to get gasoline and food and use the restrooms at the same time in some place like Empire…) Travel with your own gasoline, water, food, 1st aid kits and fire extinguishers. Be self reliant… keep your pee bottles, shovels and toilet paper handy. Unfortunately you just might be caught- up in a two or three day entrance/ exodus/ traffic jam…
Last weekend a friend of mine, a person that knows the back country in Central Oregon quite well, went looking for an isolated place to camp-out for the eclipse. He came back to report that he saw many people doing exactly the same thing; His conclusion was that there wasn’t going to be any such place… ( A lot of the roads will be gated and locked because of high fire danger.)

The West side of the Cascades: The Interstate I-5, the mountain passes and the highways will be parking lots. People are not going to stay inside their vehicles. They will be outside all along the road to view the event. For some period of time, it will be a huge clog and nobody’s going to go anywhere, at least for a while.
If there are accidents, breakdowns, medical or other emergency's: police, fire/rescue and tow trucks may not be able to get to where they are needed. (!)
And that's gonna be fucked-up.
Be prepared. Carry your own supplies and be patient with others and yourself.

Try my yard for a few campers.. 10 mile west of top dead center of the eclipse.. Going south after will be easy .. I can show you an old road..

Anyone in North America could have a look at the shadows during the passage.

Actually I was more amazed by the shadows then the vague cloud covered partial eclipse long ago.

Wildlife, radiation temperature, colours all vary some.

The distance to the moon is about 1.3 light second, imagine the beam closer to earth lagging behind the motion of the moon.

If you have missed 'it' and would llike to see an eclipse ever, you have got to hurry.
The moon is flying away from the earth and in 350 million years there will be no totality during an eclipse anymore.

^lolz better not procrastinate...

I went to Lincoln City, OR to watch the eclipse on the beach, saw a whale while we were waiting... animals started freaking out before anything was visible to the human eye. The crecent sun as the the moon began to cross was pretty cool too... Then the animals went bonkers when the totality hit, so did humans...

That two minutes of totality was pretty epic... like a full moon if the moon was a ring...

But the 18 hour drive back to Chico sucked, traffic was a shit show, so we took the long way home...

I'm glad I got to see an eclipse... but my cynical side says if you gotta travel more than half an hour to see it it's not worth it...
