Dad, almost a year now, still can't believe it. I was running a little late for the M&G @ BDC, made a call home as I usually do midweek to check on things. Parents were in an auto accident the day before, dad was gone, mom was banged up but so so. Could not believe what I was hearing. Worst phone call, day, and burn ever...I miss him much and think about him daily. He wanted me to sit down and stay for breakfast the morning I was leaving for BRC. I said that I couldn't because I was in a hurry to get going, didn't hug. Fuck, bad choice. Take time for this shit, it's important. You never know when or how. Not sure I ever told him that I LOVE him, but I do.

Maybe this should have gone in the FUCK! thread...

Sad to hear about Bin and everyone's losses, condolences. RIP to all.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

My best friend John B. died 3 years ago today from ALS. We hung out from 1968 til he died. Countless trips to Mexico and Costa Rica, many businesses. Some very successful, some just for fun. We always knew the disease would come knocking, and it did. 3 years. Fuck.

Bin is gone?

I can't let his passing go without taking a minute to acknowledge one of the best people I've ever had the privilege of getting to know...and who influenced me in so many ways. I look around where I'm at now and see things that I wouldn't have had it not been for some advice he gave me long ago.

I'm just stunned.
I mean literally, physically, emotionally stunned to learn this.

Words sometimes fail to convey a sense of loss....this is one of those times.

I offer my condolences and my utmost respect for one hell of a good man.

There's an article on The Reno Gazette Journal's website about this. I've copied the text here because there's an annoying survey you have to fill in to read it

A Reno man helping to build Black Rock City in advance of Burning Man died Wednesday night on the playa, according to Burning Man officials.
In a letter Thursday to employees, the Burning Man organization said Scott "Spoono" Stephenson, who was in his late 50s, died "in the city he loved most."
Pershing County Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Stephens said the department was investigating a death but could not confirm the name. He said any medical exam or autopsy would be performed in Washoe County.

Burning Man officials said that he died of natural causes, though the cause of death is unconfirmed.

Stephenson had been in Gerlach, just outside the Burning Man site, since April, helping with preparations for the 2015 Burning Man event, which takes place from Aug. 30 to Sept. 7 this year.

Stephenson was a member of Burning Man's Department of Public Works, which builds Black Rock City over the course of August. He was also a founding member of Black Rock Solar, which provides low-cost energy services to clients in the nonprofit, public, low-income and educational sectors.

The full text of Burning Man's letter to staff can be read below:

Burning Man announced today the loss of beloved Department of Public Works staff member Scott "Spoono" Stephenson. Spoono passed away overnight on the playa, in the city he loved most.

Stephenson was in his late 50s and died of apparent natural causes, according to Pershing County officials. Stevenson had been in Gerlach and on the playa since April supporting construction of Black Rock City. His passing will have an enormous impact on the Burning Man community.

"Spoono has been a fixture of our DPW since 2005," said Burning Man CEO Marian Goodell. "In 2005 he was one of the first to depart for Mississippi to help residents in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, working, among other things, as a cook for the team that grew to become Burners Without Borders. He will be missed by many of us including myself."

Spoono was a founding crew member of Black Rock Solar, working tirelessly to install solar arrays across Nevada for those who would benefit most - schools, hospitals, tribes, and other non-profit organizations - for six years. He'd been a Runner for DPW's purchasing department for 10 years and cooked for work weekends for equally as long, as well as handling cooking for early arrival crews on the ranch for several years. He was on point to cook for the Man crew when we had to rebuild the man in 2007.

"Spoon was a deeply generous man, with a huge heart, who gave so much love and care though his food," said Tom Price, one of the founders of Burners Without Borders and founding Executive Director of Black Rock Solar. "He was a miracle worker with food—I once watched him feed 15 volunteers for a week with only $50. He always worked himself to exhaustion, but didn't have a lick of quit in him—there was never a morning you woke up he didn't have coffee on, strong enough to strip paint. And if you were really good, or really lucky, it came with a side of piping hot beignets."
Spoono embodied the best of Burning Man values and culture. He was generous to a fault, giving all that he had to the community he loved. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Burning Man is providing support and grief counseling to staff and volunteers on the playa during this difficult time.

Plans for a celebration of life and memorial service will be announced shortly.

Spoono will be missed.

If I die on playa and my Dept head sends out an email, (like DPW did), I want it to end with a 'employement oportunity' listing. "Immediate opening availabe for Potty Patrol Sector Chief. Must be highly disorganized, (ADD a plus), and able to meet for breakfast at 7 am promptly." Then I want an immediate memorial pee-wee golf tournament. Please let me die as I lived, laughing at myself and at life in general.

At the event, I found out from his wife Jewel (who he married at Burning Man a few years ago) that Further, AKA "Teardropper" left this world late last year.

I'll miss you buddy.

"it aint over til it's over"

rest in peace Master Yogi Berra.

On his approach to at-bats: "You can't think and hit at the same time."

On selecting a restaurant: "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."

On economics: "A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore."

On the 1973 Mets: "We were overwhelming underdogs."

On how events sometimes seem to repeat themselves "It's deja vu all over again!"

On baseball attendance: "If people don't come to the ballpark, how are you gonna stop them?"

On a slipping batting average: "Slump? I ain't in no slump. ... I just ain't hitting."

On travel directions: "When you come to a fork in the road take it."

On pregame rest: "I usually take a two-hour nap from 1 to 4."

On battling the shadows in left field at Yankee Stadium: "It gets late early out there."

On fan mail: "Never answer an anonymous letter."

On being told he looked cool: "You don't look so hot yourself."

On being asked what time it was: "You mean now?"

On being given a day in his honour: "Thank you for making this day necessary."

On a spring training drill: "Pair off in threes."

On his approach to playing baseball: "Baseball is 90 per cent mental. The other half is physical."

On death: "Always go to other people's funerals. Otherwise they won't go to yours."

On learning: "You can observe a lot by watching."

On his team's diminishing pennant chances: "It ain't over 'till it's over."

On the fractured syntax attributed to him: "I really didn't say everything I said."

On staying in motels: "The towels were so thick I could hardly close my suitcase"

Steven Lowell Inness stepped in front of a train last night. He left a note with helpful instructions for the coroner.

Today nobody is surprised. Steve was well and widely known as a nut. Yet the World’s wealthiest, best educated, and supposedly most humanitarian society failed him.

Rest finally in peace, Steve Inness. I know your tortured mind needed it.

But nobody should ever need to do this.
