Seeking Metal Artists for Off-Playa Public Scultpure

Greetings!

I'm an 11 year Burning Man veteran and I teach engineering at a public high school in Tacoma, WA. My principal is fascinated by Burning Man and has always been accommodating of my attendance (including covering for me this year when I missed the first week of classes due to the rain!).

With the support of a bond measure, we will be doing a tear down and rebuild of our school within the next couple of years and he has asked me to seek out artists that might be interested in creating a large, metal sculpture that would be permanently and publicly displayed outside our new school. He is most interested in a person or team that is relatively local, or would be willing to relocate for the design and build so that our engineering students could be involved in the process (i.e. using the metal shop of our school for the construction).

The project would be paid for through our supporting non-profit organization.

If anyone is interested, or could pitch me the contact info of anyone you think might be interested, please let me know!

Thanks!

That is a grand project you have there. Very nice.

SeaTac has a rich community and I’m fairly confident you can get some folks interested.

Head on over to the regional pages and ping the listed contacts with your project information.

Also reach out to Tabasco, the main fire conclave wrangler for Crimson. He is a blacksmith by trade and has built on the Playa for decades. I’m sure he will have a strong bead on metalworkers in the area.

And last but not least, if you can provide a bit more detail on the scale and aesthetic of the project, some more creative leg work up front, that will go a long way towards attracting the right talent.

Define your role up-front. Are you the artist with the vision or are you the project manager with a slide rule and pocket protector?

Good luck!
