2022 - Looking for an awesome camp for me (a Project / Program Manager) and my wife (a teacher and event planner)

Hey all!

I figure I would start it out really early. Top of the list, front of the line, first match of the burn.

My wife and I are looking for an awesome camp for our virgin burn. We have done many other events and we know how being part of a group makes us more connected. Really excited about finding a cool camp to work with!!

Background
US
As full-time RVrs, we can show up early to the burn and would love to help you get your camp ready. We love adventure, new things, and connecting with people. This is our 5th year on the road and we have been everywhere from Maine to Florida, Oregon to Puerto Vallarta. We love this lifestyle and the new friends we have made on our journey. We have two sons, one in college, one just graduated. We will be married 30 years in October. Our RV has solar and a generator - we have done lots and lots of boondocking all over the country.

Me (Pete)
National Program Manager - I still work full-time and implement very large hardware and software solutions for very large companies. I tend to be
  • Logical, methodical, well-researched, and well planned
  • Technical. There isn't much that I cannot do with computer hardware or software. I build my own desktops and I have a 40tb, Raid 5 NAS in my RV if that gives you an idea
  • Comfortable with most common applications out from word processors, to databases
  • Handy with tools. I can build or fix just about anything, though I would prefer not working on your motors or your electricity
I love meeting new folks and am looking to try to get back to my more spiritual roots.

Maryellen
Retired teacher. From 3rd through 8th grade. Recently fell in love with event planning. I have done a number of events from weddings to corporate events. I have
  • Raised two athletic and adventurous boys and all that entails
  • Taught public schools for years, from 3rd grade through 8th
  • Have performed company and corporate training
  • Have worked for event-management companies on everything from professional soccer games to weddings
  • Put up with her husband < Edit: pete put that in there. LOL >
Love people. Love meeting new friends. Love adventure>

Welcome! We often suggest burners connect with their "Burning Man Regional (s)" and peruse the "2019 Burning Man theme camps" Obviously look in your in-person networks as well.

The event is held on a dry lakebed. It is alkaline dried mud. All the vehicles crunch it up into powder the consistency of baby powder which smells like ammonia. That blows around in dust storms - there are many photos and videos you can find.

There are several threads on helping your RV and your self against the dust, pre-, on-playa-, and post-.

Hello there!

Thanks for the response! Please see my notes below and let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Best,
Pete

We often suggest burners connect with their "Burning Man Regional (s)"
|pa| - My wife and I live in an RV and wander. We don't really have a region

and peruse the "2019 Burning Man theme camps"
|pa| - Yeah, I really did try that. Many many many of the links no longer work. I would imagine that 2 years later many folks have moved on. I'm looking forward to seeing folks being adding to the 2022 page.

Obviously look in your in-person networks as well.
|pa| - Oh, our families think that we've lost our minds. ( I do hope that they are right ). None of our friends have gone.

|pa| - Watched many vids. Seen the dust. We have masks and have boondocked for years, sometimes for a month at a time. Hopefully this has us well prepared.

|pa| - Thanks! I am really looking forward to finding a home camp

"Belong to" a home camp is extremely over-rated. Often kills a lot of your flexibility. Can limit, sometimes seriously depending on the "camp", the width and often the depth of the BRC experience. It can rob you of a lot, compared to "build your own BRC experience". Discussed numerous times on eplaya. (A first-night camp "pow-wow" to find your "playa name"? GFO! Seriously - G. F. O.!)
Some find a camp where their thing and that camp's thing align. If not, why are you there? Searching? Why limit most of your searching/experiences to that camp, when you can free-range BRC?

Camp "alone", and suddenly most of those camping around you are your home camp.

My first year, I loved that I could be out & about, free-ranging BRC, helping or solving a problem, screening for dehydration & heat stroke, handing out water, Emergen-C, sun-screen & vinegar packs (and stuff others gave me to hand out lol), whenever I wanted. (Or not. If that's your thing. Or your thing that day. Or that afternoon. Etc.) I had tons of offers & invites to all sorts of things from that, but I was too busy doing that... lol Loved it!
I was helping fix things for people in three locations of the gathering hords in Reno, before the migration started to BRC for the opening to the general population. Tons of fun! Hello Walmart parking-lot! (among others)

I go to the playa and get to be me on my terms. No camp is going to crimp that on me. YRMV...

Hi!
I'm looking for a camp for me as well.
I'm from Brazil and I'm going by myself. It will be my first BM.
I'm kind of lost, but I can help in any project. I wish I can join you in your camp

Juiz, every year we adopt some "newbs" that are wandering around on the first day, looking for a home. People that are not with a camp, simply looking for a spot. We love our newbs every year, fun to help out and share. Simply spend a few hours wandering and talking to "not theme-camp camps" and you will be welcomed to set up with one of them. Joining a theme camp is not a requirement to experience the burn, we are always just a group of friends that camp near each other. Don't stress out about this, you are welcome to find us over at 3:30 and J.

Very excellent post. Thank you for taking the time to write it. I will talk to my wife about it and make a decision at some point. Best wishes and hope to see you there!

You sound like awesome neighbors! A bold start to a camp-out where you have to bring all your own stuff and not leave any trash. Your camping bona fides are impeccable as well. If you could drop your other titles and grab that rebar over there…? Or build something anybody who walked by your camp might remember. Don’t sign up with a douchy group. Be selective. Take it in maybe, year one. Believe me you will have soooo many ideas after you see this for real. Recruit, recruit, for your big managed deal your sophomore year. Consider volunteering maybe. Sounds like you could do great things. 2 cents ain’t worth what it used to be. Welcome to Eplaya.

"2 cents ain't what it used to be", but a day on the Playa tells you everything you will ever need to know. seeyasoon!

Oi!

Thanks for the kind words. Already met with one group - not a great fit. May seriously take your (and other) advice and freelance it the first time. Get a feel. Check things out. Maybe do the camp thing next time. We both like trying to lend a hand where it might be needed and I suspect that we'll be put to good use no matter how we land, right? And, if you put your two cents in, but it is only a penny for your thoughts, who is making all that money and what the hell are they doing with it?

Thanks for the welcome!
