Join the Squad: PEERS (formerly Camp Survey Squad)

Are you friendly and interested in having conversations with your fellow Burners? Want to visit and learn about all kinds of camps? Placement's Exploration and Engagement Research Squad (PEERS) - formerly known as Camp Survey Squad (CSS) - is looking for volunteers.

PEERS’ mission is to visit all 1200+ theme camps in Black Rock City. PEERS volunteers work in pairs to visit camps in 4-hours shifts — taking pictures, interviewing camp leads, and finding out how things are going with camps and neighborhoods. PEERS helps to ensure that camps that are doing a great job get the recognition they deserve, and that camps facing challenges get the on-playa attention they need.

To volunteer for PEERS, please fill out this Volunteer Interest Form or email [email protected].

Following up with important new information.

PEERS is still looking for more volunteers, but if you would like to join the PEERS team this year, there are actually *two* steps. One is to fill out the link in the first post. The second is to go to your burner profile and fill out your Volunteer Questionnaire, indicating "Placement" as the team you'd like to volunteer for (this may eventually lead to a question about what part of placement - select the one that includes "Survey Squad".

Apologies for any confusion. I was trying to save everyone a step, but it turns out that filling out the VQ on your burner profile is a technical prerequisite - without that, we can't get you into the system to allow you to sign up for a shift.

So, to be clear, we want you to fill out both forms. Hopefully we'll be able to streamline that in future years.

Thanks all,

Stickybeak (he/him)
PEERS Volunteer Coordinator

(Also for clarity - while I've been "Papa Bear" here since '03-ish, I am not Papa Bear the Placer. We are totally different people. That's why I'm known as Stickybeak within Placement/PEERS.)

I can't join the team because I'm booked that week. I sincerely hope you get a bunch of volunteers. In 2019 they didn't visit our camp. We had a great year and perfect moop record. YET, placement didn't give us high regard. I want them to come see our cute little camp and witness the magic we do. good luck and thank you for all that you do.

Sorry to hear that. Having been to your camp, I'm honestly surprised.

We've been doing a lot of work to refine our processes to make sure we can visit every camp. That will, of course, depend on whether we can gather enough volunteers to get to everyone, but I'm still beating the drum on that and will right up until the day I head out.

Assuming we have space in the new, not-yet-finalized Placement HQ somewhere in center camp, I want to create a board where our volunteers can come back and add a little note for any camps they thought were particularly wonderful, so that other people can read them and go seek them out too.
