We need a new kind of shuttle

Post by popsiclemessiah » Mon Sep 12, 2022 1:47 am

We can all agree that as BM grows so will vehicle traffic. What we need most is to have less vehicle on the playa and the ideal way to do that is to get more people to burning man without their vehicle. The main blocker to doing this is that people need to bring a lot of "stuff" to survive in the desert and it has to arrive on the playa somehow. For the mass majority it doesn't make sense to use the burner shuttle and even those people usually has someone else trucking in their stuff.

WHAT WE NEED

We need a place around Gerlach where burners can opt to park their vehicles and utilize a shuttle service composed of large moving trucks which can transport them and a large quantity of "stuff" they plan to bring in to the event. This way people can truck what they need most of the way then park a few miles away from the event where the traffic can be handled easier and have their stuff trucked in the last few miles.

Does anyone think this could work? Would you use a service like this to get to the burn?

Additional thoughts...
It might be possible to position the parking area on another part of the playa so that the moving trucks could simply ride across the playa to get to the event. (However I am not sure about the regulations regarding where official vehicles can drive. They might not be able to drive outside the event area)

Burning man is not growing. The population is capped at 80K. Seems like a huge duplication of effort and an unnecessary addition of a huge amount of trucks moving on and off playa. Have you heard about the Burning Man Container Program? Edit: The logistics of this idea are a no go. Have you been to Burning Man?

As fewer people have personal capacity to haul what they need, shelter, food and water, the trash problem greatly increases, and the personally contributed materials to the event, art mainly, decreases. Give more rides, and the consumer spectator group increases. The outsourcing of the event becomes the expectation, and the necessity. Outsourcing eliminates personal responsibility, civic awareness and connection.

I had heard this year the numbers were down quite a bit. I had heard 50k range and ticket dumping right before the event.
Anyone know if this is true?

Which brings us full circle to the fact that there was one out there this year, the only thing missing was the service... I found it super late after temple burn, way out I sat for a while in the dark on a bench outside but the train never showed.

A couple of dudes in an suv came bombing through on the track section though, and a crew in a side by side.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Several camp members tried to use the Burner Express but it was sold out.

Rather than a new service, the org should increase the availability of the current system.

I too found the train station after the temple burn. Noted there were dickwads driving cars around that night.

BTW Reno locals are sick of the trash deposited by burners, also I saw way too much trash in the potties.
