Black Rock City Welding & Repair - Want to join us?

Black Rock City Welding & Repair- We're a little low on population so if you are a good human, don't leave a wake of destruction and mayhem every where you go, can take care of yourself, try to solve your own problems before dragging other people in( low drama), wanna just be part of a pretty laid back camp that helps out a bunch of burners... Whatever. Most of you know us.

We don't buy anything from service providers or fuel from the org so you or your small group need to be totally radically self reliant and champions at leave no trace.

Yes we have required work hours for every camp member in the shop to support our interactivity regardless of repair skill level. It's not too tough and shifts are 2 hours each so you can slide a shift in between the awesome things you want to do on playa. There are multiple shifts that the number of depend on several factors like if you will be present for setup and or teardown or not. Even the most sparkle pony arrive late and leave early of us will probably not have to work more than 8 hours total shift time(lower population means more shifts). We're all here to see the burn right--- Well except for the mayor he's in camp all the time and can't break free.

We have a bar too and working it is voluntary. I already know that's where you will gravitate to often.

We have a shared expenses contribution and bar contribution because repair supplies, camp logistics and alcohol just don't appear out of thin air.

We're located near the first bank of shitters on 3:30 so you wont have to walk far for that if that is even a consideration.

We've got a pretty awesome Solar Power System that ran the Welder, Shop and Bar but you can not plug your RV in to it. You could charge your hand held devices from it though... Maybe your Ebike if you promise to never exceed 5mph in the city and 10 mph on the open playa.

Sometimes we sit around a fire at night, grouse at passers by, cook hotdogs, invite people to cook hotdogs and I call out to ole Eplayans I recognize. If I'm not in bed yet from working myself to death daily repairing stuff and helping camp run smooth.

Lets see what kind of action this brings in.

I don’t need a camp but ours is near yours and if you need some shifts covered for a TIG/stick welder I’d be happy to come fix a few things. I can also CAD up and sinter parts but I doubt you’re running that on solar.

What a Camp! What an asset to the Community. Sure, who doesn't need a free hug at some point, and sunrise yoga is a healthy way to start the day, but this is real substance. METAL.

Black Rock City Welding and Repair saved my BURN.

My chariot broke one year, it breaks every year. I used to ride people all over the playa, that was my thing. One year the frame broke. I spent a day going to every bike shop in BRC. (A day on playa is a month in normy time) My friend Jackass told me there was a fellow eplayan out here bragging about a badass welding unit. It took some figuring to get the camp name, then I had to track down location.

This camp repaired my chariot and "saved," my Burn. I had spent 2 days trying to get this fixed, and they fixed it. I was able to go on and give dozens of people a lift across BRC. It was a dream! My only regret!? I paid with a 6 pack, a lousy six pack...

Serious mechanical structural help on the playa when something breaks. Great people. The Real Deal.

Well I know where I’m bringing that rickety contraption of a chariot when it breaks this year.

Or maybe it’s still broken from last year?

Anyways I’m glad I now have an excuse to come find ya motsky. I’ll bring a 12 pack.

We're at 3:30 and Chupacabra! Come on by. We mostly fix bikes but the occasional welding job comes in. We have a bar too.

Hi! My wife and I are looking for a camp to join.
Pretty much all we need is a shade to set our tent in. The rest we have with us.
I'm not a welder, but I can wrench (I fix my motorcycles and bicycles all the time) or do any kind of physical work.
I also can cook or barbecue, do some basic construction work, also I'm good at drinking beer.

I can bring my battery powered tools, wrenches it that helps.
Please let me know if it can work out.

I sent you a message here on this platform and forgot to mention one thing. If you end up joining us we have some additional Work Access Passes if you wanted to arrive early and help set up camp. It's a good way to get used to the elevation and heat of the playa and really get to know your camp mates.

To everyone else who got stars in their eyes when i mentioned available WAP. No I will not provide you WAP for any reason. Unless of course you are in my camp.

Hey Motz!!! How's things?
Do you know of anyone on playa familiar with RV refrigerators? My friend is heading out and his fridge died, with no time to address it before hitting the playa in the next few days.

Damn that's poor timing! I do not know of anyone out there with that experience but surely someone is out there has it. If they have access to power while they are out there there are many used dorm fridges for sale for cheap. They barely use power. Our propane fridge failed on playa last year because it was so hot and the fridge just stalled so we are taking a medium sized electric fridge to cover in case it fails again and powering it with solar.

Things they can do to see if things have changed. Try it again after the drive and see if the drive provided a cure. Make sure there is power to the 12 volt portion of the refrigerator accessible from the outside removable grate. If the ignitor is working then there is power. If no power check fuses. There is often a hidden pop out breaker in the tin of the "stack" where the heat from the propane flame goes. Often it is behind a little removable piece of tin. Check that. Occasionally they trip. Carefully take apart the shielded flame assembly and clean the thermocouple and remove debris. The part where the flame emanates from may need a cleaning with a toothbrush or light brush. The propane jet orifice might need to be cleaned as residue from propane can build up on them and inhibit proper flow. Remove orifice carefully and clean in alcohol with a non shedding rag or tightened up Qtip(this is a 2 wrench sensitive operation like steel brake lines). Put everything back just like it was and verify the thermocouple is being heated well by the flame.

If there was smell of ammonia then it's a catastrophic failure and nothing can be done except replace the workings on the back with new or replace unit.

Maybe you could forward this and it could help? I hope it faith heals itself on the drive.

There is also the magic cure of flipping the unit upside-down for 24 hours, provided your friend pulls the fridge out.

Most of the explanations sound like pseudo-science to me … vapor locked, rust accumulating, crystals formed etc.

I can’t vouch for the science behind this (which bugs me to no end), but I know plenty folks that bought old Coachman rides for the Playa dirt cheap and this they claim fixed the fridges.

YMMV.

I’d do what Motski said first, to be honest.

yeah, I'm sure it's an electronic thing. The refrigeration side worked perfect, but he said the whole thing quit after he pressure washed the rig, so my thinking is electronic. I detailed my efforts in the response to Motz, above.

Ahh, then it’s a multimeter in hand and scour the Interwebs for schematics.

Y’all are heroes! Good luck to your friend and their effort.
