BRC transportation prices in 2026 are in flux because of fuel prices

The 2024 Census, the current most complete, shows our transportation modes. The fossil fuel used to transport participants and our stuff is studied by the sustainability group. Airlines are fiercely competitive and fuel is their great variable cost.

2024:

About 25% of participants flew at least part way to BRC. That number peaked at 36% in 2017. With many remote workers today, even some staff are going to be flying.

A news search for airfare prices has all kinds of debate on when to book given the uncertainty. Domestic US flight prices in mid March are up about 150% and world flights are up 500%.

Depending on how long the war goes on and what oil and gas infrastructure is destroyed, we don't know what the price of Jet-A, aviation gas, gasoline, or diesel will be. That is going to impact the contracts for OSS, BxB, and BxA.

It will effect the BRC budget, the ticket system was designed for a budget without increased fuel prices. It is going to impact participant budgets in yet to be known ways.

The OSS BLM Special Recreation Permit application period to the BLM is March 1-31. There may be an impact on the April European leadership meetup as well.

We have never been able to afford to go to Burning Man every year. Every 2 to 3 years we can manage it. The RV rental is the biggest cost with fuel being next. The cost of fuel this year is going to keep us away. This not something we can plan in a moments notice.
