MOVE THE EVENT TO SOVEREIGN LAND

Post by RainbowGazer » Sun Sep 13, 2015 1:24 am

I'm sure this has probably been discussed but maybe it hasn't but just incase. Why not move the event. Considering all the cops and all the taxes and what not. I'd be willing to bet if you were to pay out half of ticket sales to a near by native reservation then they'd let you party there no problem. Has anyone discussed this with any native tribal leaders?

I don't know the whole law regarding US police jurisdiction on sovereign native american land but I want to say that in that scenario, the police would have to piss off and there would be no taxes. And How much does the event pull in ticket sales? I'm guessing somewhere around 20-40 mil. Surly 20 mil for a couple weeks per year would be enough for some native americans to loan a small piece of land out for a huge festival.

Sometimes police are a good thing. I'm sure they do a good job at keeping the violence down but at what cost? When they can simply come in unannounced and uninvited and start entrapping people because that's what they do now to make money. That kind of behavior shouldn't be allowed in a utopian society and therefore they should have to leave.

What do yall think?

You should consider paying taxes a great patriotic duty.

If you look at the Burning Man Afterburn Reports, 2013 and pre-, you can deduce that Burning Man pays less than about $6M today to law enforcement, prosecution and the BLM out of revenues in probably about the mid-30's. That is why not adding a million for ChacoTacoTM Gate was worth the fight.

Burning Man HAS been moved before.
I'm quite sure we're better off dealing with the BLM than the Indian tribal government.
And what trouble are the cops, if/when you're not doing anything wrong? Laws will still apply on reservation lands. All sorts of laws.

That was the year that the sheriff took the entire box office, wasn't it. I know that there's no tickets at the gate (except low income), but it seems BLM may offer protections that tribal land can't.

Well, have you ever picked up a permit to camp on Pyramid Lake and read the fine print? It's not like there are no laws on Sovereign Land.

I haven't picked one up in years, and not going to bother reading them now, but in the day there were regulations against swearing... All disputes were handled by Tribal Court. There might be some issues with turning the event over to another entity.
Here is a link to the 32 pages of regulations.-

It seems it would take a lot to even think about moving the event.

The logistics and establishing new relationships with powers that be would be a hell of a hill to climb!!!

Having no LE around isn't necessarily a great thing. That's basically what happens at one regional on tribal land and there's been some incidents...

I'm moving this thread over to politics and philosophy, since that's a better fit. ePlaya Feedback is intended for feedback about this website. Please remember, this is a community message board. If you would like to provide feedback to Burning Man about the event, stay tuned to the Jack Rabbit Speaks newsletter for information on sending feedback to the Burning Man organization.
