I mean, are we surprised that the guy who's family fortunes were built on the backs of slavery would be openly advocating for its return in the form of indentured servitude in a colony on a planet un-bound by the laws of Earth?

Only at least in Australia you could breathe the air and raise livestock. There is literally nothing on Mars worth humans doing unless you're a scientist or something. Maybe a Mars Only Fans account?

I can't believe Musk thinks that he should be paid to send people live in what would be the most desolate location humans can occupy. The novelty is going to wear off really quick, like being in lockdown for the rest of your life. Enjoy the empty reddish expanse as far as the eye can see. That or the walls of your tiny pod.

Here you go. TL:DR, Spacex exaggerates their cost savings "per kilogram". Worth looking at.

These are great thinkers and people who want to leave a mark in this world. Elon really advocates for innovations and change.

I agree that you shouldn't think negatively about Elon Musk. Of course, he makes a lot of money, but he also brought a lot of cool things into the world that benefit humanity.
The sole contribution to humanity Musk has ever made is incidentally financing some people with good ideas in his ongoing quest to pad his own ego. He is a bad human being who came out of unearned wealth and privilege on the back of an apartheid state, and has been the showcase example of someone consistently failing upward due to having no positive qualities except a substantial bank balance.

Elon Musk could pull his face off tomorrow and reveal he is a lizard and I wouldn’t give two fucks about it.

Just to be clear, there was a "commodifying' post up there between FlyingMonkey and Lucky's posts. I flagged it and it's gone now (thanks as always mods!), but it makes remaining posts sometimes appear awkward.

Oh, you'll see him at BRC, he's busy wiping his ass on low earth orbit so we'll have a wonderful view of the grid of 48k LEO sats StarLink wants to put up instead of the stars over the deep desert.

Seems like the perfect self-reliant vehicle to drive out 125+ miles from the nearest charger and park for a week on a surface it may sink into.

Sure hope somebody's got a 240v jump pack to rescue your ass. :D

That would actually be a snarky art project. Have a bunch of EV chargers in deep Playa hooked up to coal powered generators belching black smoke. Something like a steampunk nightmare powering modern "Clean" technology. Next to it can be a toxic pool from the Playa Lithium mine.

Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that we have so many EV options now. But I think we need to be a little more honest when it comes to the energy consumed & waste produced by the industry. I think we are headed in the right direction but we are far from "Clean".

Unless Elon Musk provides a rocket trip back home to Earth, he better be packing crate loads of cyanide capsules for all the people who are going to want to kill themselves after realizing that Mars is probably the most boring place in the world -- worlds -- to spend the rest of your life upon.

A world with a dimmer sun, no plant life, no way to survive outdoors without a suit.

A land where the terrain is rust-colored everywhere you go.

No radiation protection, so you're living in these specialized pods or underground. Whoopdeedoo! Will there even windows in the rooms?

And what are you going to do on Mars after you've walked the city concourse or seen the same damn red mountains surrounding the city thousand times? Read your Facebook feed at 500 bits-per-second? Stare that the tiny spot on the horizon in the morning that is Earth, longing for the days before you thought it was a good idea to die on this barren desert planet, living underground?

A colony on Mars is a complete waste of time and resources. In fact, there's probably nowhere worth colonizing off Earth. No place we've found, or can get to, even approximates even the worst places on Earth for living. That's right, it's better living in the middle of the Sahara desert or Antarctica, or the bottom of the ocean, than it is to be anywhere else in space.

All these rockets into space for people will serve only one purpose in the future: space tourism. Nobody, but the "sherpas," or maybe some scientists, are going to have a "permanent" presence in outer space. There's no point if you're just "living" there. People will take their week to month trip, have their fill, and then return to Earth.

Who even really wants to see a planet on the ground anyway except in pictures? Did the pictures from Titan look super appealing? It looked like the shores of a lake, only made of methane. Yeah, that's where I want to camp.

What a waste of money too. Why not spend it on rovers or probes or other unmanned vehicles to that don't care about boredom as they seek out and image and sense space stuff. Who needs human eyes seeing these things in person?
I'm a super fan Elon Musk and his projects, But your analogy makes too much sense   :o

there was a project on playa, maybe 09? where a German crew was trying to harvest electricity be some means I don't recall exactly. Like the potential difference and static electricity between the dry moving air and moist alkaline soils sub surface. IIRC, the contact here on eplaya was Karl Von Hess? I'll see if I can find the thread in the search, something like "Power on the playa" or some such. they were loosely connected to "Ein Hammer" Mr. Jellyfish's art project.

yeah, "clean" EV/solar/ wind tech is a long way off. the crowing about how "clean" it is, is very premature...hoping though, at some point, it turns the corner.
