Ola Loa Drinks at Center Camp

Post by marybeth » Wed Jan 20, 2010 12:16 pm

Hi Y'all!

Last year was my first burn, and loved every second of it.

I loved Center Camp, and hung out there every day. Along with coffee, they were selling a drink called Ola Loa. It was like gatorade but tasted a lot better. I've been trying to find it here at home since I got back.

It was great, so please don't get me wrong when I ask - doesn't selling a commercial product like this violate Burning Man's Decommodification Principal?

I don't mind it, I'm just curious.

The answer is "YES", but if BMorg is doing it, then they call it a service for the good of the community and then it's OK!

Yeah, I think they should sell spaghetti too, that would taste good and go a long way toward keeping me alive over the course of the week.
It's going to be alright.

According to the LLC, no. And I guess the BLM doesn't have an issue with it either.
other people take umbridge. In fact, we might just be at the beginning of a whole lot of umbridge taking right here.

As I understand the history, the BLM shut down the commercial establishments for health code and other reasons. I actually googled something to get an idea of how blm does permits like that, and I could only find one place that had consignments and I think it must have been roach coaches or something because they had to get off the land every five days for cleaning. Anyway, where I was going with this is that "decommodification" is a virtue embraced when sales were shut down on playa. And the ultimate thing is that Larry wants the center camp space to be available for everybody, even those who are new and don't yet have the skills to interact in other parts of the playa were things are maybe nebullous. The cafe provides the money to build the tent space.

Interesting. I'm beginning to understand.

The 10 Principles are flexible, and more like general guidelines. It's still a nice idea to have principles, though. I hope they sell the drinks again next year, because I won't have to bring so much water. LOL.

I think the sales all get charitably donated into the Gerlach community..... It doesn't go into the BM Org bottom line......

As far as "what/who's products" they choose to sell...... That would be for the Org to respond......

I'm glad it helped you through your experience, though...........

thisisthatwhichis, that's awesome if the profits go to charity. do you know if it's true?

i plan to go next year, and i know that food is the only other thing i'll need to bring to survive. water and shelter are totally provided by Burning Man. we basically camped at center camp!

i'm wishing that, like coffee, Burning Man could provide something like spaghetti at center camp. if they did, then i would only need to bring myself and money to have a great time out there. our kitchen and meal schedule was a constant source of drama in our camp. if we could cut that need out, then we'd be totally free out there. everyone in our camp was saying the same thing... the water and center camp was our salvation. center camp itself was the main center of the whole experience for us.

it was wonderful, and can only get better.

or you could just be self reliant, camp by yourself, and be totally free (no need to have the Org do something first)

Which event were you at? I would really hate to have a first timer read this and actually think that you know what you're talking about. There's no water (unless you melt ice) and there will be no spaghetti (even the canned shit) in center camp.

Someone---anyone, correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right, Shambala.

Sorry Kurt, you're wrong. The profits of Center Camp Cafe do go to creation and upkeep of the whole Center Camp Cafe Tent space and the stages for performance and discussions. It's supposed to break even.

Ice sales go to the local community, including the schools. Aluminum cans turned into Recycle Camp also go to local charities.

Edited for spelling.

The rangers tend to get a little crabby at you if you try to sleep at center camp for long periods of time...at least at night. And with exception of the sport drinks or whatever the fuck they were selling last year at the cafe, I wouldn't anticipate being able to buy up all your hydration requirements at the event. In fact, they'll likely turn you away at the gate if you show up without any god damn water. And who even knows if that stuff will be back next year?

So, uh, this is wrong.

My first year I too spent a lot of time at center camp, and I had a great time there. As years have gone by I've found myself spending less and less time there, down to almost never setting foot in there. Why? There's cooler things around the city. Get up and venture around a little more. I can't promise we won't bite, but I can promise you'll be in for a wild time.

Let go of your cash dollars for a week and give self reliance a go. It can be a lot of fun if done properly, not unlike anal sex.

My art project for this year is to make a GIANT bas'ketti noodle. It's going to weigh around 450 kilos and be hung on the center camp structure. I'm cooking it on Tuesday afternoon. Hopefully we will have enough sauce to cover it in everyone is urged to bring some extra sauce.

I totally need alfredo, I'm allergic to tomatoes.

Should I nail my meal requests to the cafe countertop? All 95 of them?

The first, coup de poudre (French: 'powder strike'), includes tetrodotoxin (TTX), the poison found in the pufferfish. The second powder consists of dissociative drugs such as datura. Together, these powders were said to induce a death-like state in which the victim's will would be entirely subjected to that of the bokor.
